Summary: That Which You Manifest Is Before You
Comment: Lessons through the Journey of Life as seen through the eyes of a Dog named Enzo. Enzo knows more about our place in the Universe than we do. He knows that death is not the end but rather a new beginning and, in the place where souls gather, you do live out your dreams and desires and you are free from the physical burdens that your body and living on Earth have placed on you. This book will teach you to be patient, tolerant, trusting, loving, and never give up hope, because if you remain true to yourself and others, your dreams will unfold in the proper time. This is such a great book, I am reading it again (I never read a book twice) because I did not want to miss a thing.

Summary: The art of Racing in the Rain
Comment: Should you want some real-life guidance from a doggy who uses the racing game for an metaphor, you will enjoy Garth Stein's novel. It's funny in places but mostly about a champion racer who is forced to fight the battle of his life and you will begin to notice he has the perfect "silent" partner in his struggle.

Summary: What do you call first person...
Comment: What do you call a first person story when it is told through the eyes of a dog? In this case fun, intriguing, and touching.
A sweet little parable with sad and hilarious moments. And somehow the dog meets car racing metaphors do work.

Summary: great, easy read
Comment: Hesitant at first about a book written through the eyes of a dog, I devoured this one in 2 days. It's full of life lessons, a little humor a little suspense and a lot of love.

Summary: Sleeper of the Summer
Comment: I honestly never write reviews but this was one of the best books I have read in a long time. The original idea of using the dog in the first person gave this book an interesting twist that could not happen from the "human" perspective. The book was entertaining, with some rough patches for the characters along the way. However, the ending gave hope that with faith and determination, all things are possible. This book hasn't gotten much press and seems to be a summer sleeper. At any rate, a book worth the time to read.

Editorial Reviews:

Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.

Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals.

On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoë, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoë at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man.

A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life . . . as only a dog could tell it.
