Summary: Highly underrated
Comment: This is one of my favorite movies and I cannot understand why it was dissed by critics. A lot of the comedy is slapstick, with collapsing stairs, flying Perdue chickens and "weak" trees. But in the context of rehabilitating the house, they can get away with it. This is a truly funny movie with none of the grossness that usually passes for comedy in Hollywood. And it is a must see for anybody who has ever rennovated a house. We are currently remodeling our home and use terms from the movie all the time from the "Shirk Brothers" to "anybody call a plumber?"

Summary: Carefree '80s comedy.
Comment: The Money Pit starring Tom Hanks and Shelley Long was a childhood favorite of mine, I used to watch this film all the time but watching it now, it is dated and not that funny. Tom Hanks can make any horrible film moderately good, his comic timing is impeccable, he is a genius. There are some funny moments but mostly this box office bomb is pretty lame now, just watch it if you are a die-hard Hanks fan.

Comment: I bought this video to loan to a friend who has helped to fix our house which we call the Money Pit Two! and it has made us all forget our anxieties and laugh! thank you

Summary: The Money Pit with Tom Hanks
Comment: Watching this dvd was like deja vu for me. Some of the houses I've lived in had some of these problems and we discovered them in much the same way the main characters do. I think Tom Hanks and Shelley Long were very believable. This dvd is very entertaining and "scary".

Summary: A few laughs, but dated and poorly written
Comment: This is not a good comedy, it is a bad one. Let's remember that this bombed when it came out. There is no story in this movie except a house falling apart, and that is the only gag as well, a lot of ridiculous scenes of parts of the house spontaneously falling apart. As implausible as this is, it's occasionally mildly funny, unlike any of the dialogue, which is just implausible and not funny. Tom Hanks is in his forced acting stage, and very plastic. And Shelly Long, uff, let's not even go there.

Editorial Reviews:

Steven Spielberg produced this underwhelming 1986 effort at a slapstick spin on Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. The pre-Oscar Tom Hanks stars with Shelley Long as a married couple whose efforts to finish construction on their home are sabotaged by costly and sporadically funny accidents. The unfinished domicile becomes a metaphor for their troubled relationship, as evidenced by Long's character's attraction to a madman violinist (Alexander Godunov). Hanks is the only reason at this point to check this film out. Richard Benjamin (My Favorite Year) directs but with no flair or distinction. --Tom Keogh.
