Summary: Review of Newsies
Comment: My kids love this movie. And I do, too, because it is clean and tells a bit of history. Good choreography.

Summary: I think I get this whole "Newsies" deal
Comment: Sadly, despite my age, I was not one of the original fans of "Newsies". I remember seeing commercials and all back in the day, but I never did get around to seeing it until a few years back. I finally got around to buying the DVD, and I must say this enchanting little musical is growing on me. The music is wonderful, Christian Bale, Ann-Margaret, and everyone are absolutely fantastic, and the message is so positive and upbeat that I can't imagine anyone not liking it. It's as well-crafted as any proper stage musical with all the benefits of film. I also appreciate the bonuses on this DVD that explain so much of the filming and the history.

Summary: Great Music and Story Line
Comment: I am from the New England area and the accents are similar. I really love the way they talk in that movie. The songs are catchy and the story line is original and entertaining. It is a very fun movie for all ages to watch. It is one of the dying breeds of true family movies left. Great music and a great movie. I was very happy with this purchase!

Summary: Great Movie at ANY age!
Comment: I am 21 years old and I still love this movie. The story is entertaining at any level of comprehension, whether you love the history, the romance, the comedy or just like to sing along. I recommend it for any movie collection.

Summary: "Newsies" is good news.
Comment: Christian Bale is truly one of the great talents now in films. He continually amazes me with his performances in films and even makes so-so films rise above their flaws. A child actor who has become a major adult actor. The young Master Bale made this underrated film, "Newsies" a delight and handled his dancing and singing with great professionalism. Not a great film musical, but much better than I thought.

Editorial Reviews:

Except for feature-length animation, the musical has gone the way of the dinosaur. The Walt Disney company took a stab at reviving the live-action musical in 1992 with Newsies, a throwback picture with a curious subject. In 1899, the pint-sized newsboys delivering the New York papers go on strike against the unfair practices of news magnates Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst. The production is heavy on kiddie humor, although Christian Bale (the child star of Spielberg's Empire of the Sun) is charismatic as one of the older leaders of the revolt. The adult stars don't fare as well, with Robert Duvall doddering around as Pulitzer and Ann-Margret and Bill Pullman doing decorative duty. The film was not well received when first released, but hindsight reveals its charm (and allowed the young target audience to catch up with the picture on video). The first-time director is Kenny Ortega, the choreographer of Dirty Dancing, who brings plenty of energy to the action. --Robert Horton
