Summary: Look out for the Dirty Pair - sexy, gun-toting anime babes
Comment: Yuri and Kei, the voluptuous, scantily-clad female teen space crime-fighters working for WWWA/United Galactica, get their nickname, "the Dirty Pair," not from any naughty behavior but from the fact that they leave a big mess after every job, usually after theyve exploded, intentionally or not, everything around them. They started out as characters glimpsed in a movie-within-the-movie of CRUSHER JOE: THE MOTION PICTURE (1983) and went on to appear in their own anime TV and OAV series, as well as a trio of longer spin-offs, including AFFAIR ON NOLANDIA, PROJECT EDEN and FLIGHT OO5 CONSPIRACY. Given the pairs famous pulchritude, one would have hoped that in their longest feature, the 90-minute PROJECT EDEN (1987), the animators would have given them a more babe-friendly setting than the dank, dark mine tunnels and mutant labs of a mining colony. However, since the Pair are, first and foremost, action heroines, one cant fault the animators for putting them in situations requiring lots of flying, chasing, shooting and detonating. And in the final confrontation with the rampaging monsters theyve been called in to combat, they do soar into action, especially after Mughi (their deceptively cuddly intelligent furry sidekick) has flown in hardware and power suits for their use. A touch of romance emerges in the form of Carson, a handsome smuggler who ignites a spark of passion in Kei and engages in some amusing repartee with her.
The plot is pretty much a standard sci-fi monster tale with distinct echoes of James Camerons ALIENS (from the year before). A mad scientist on a mining colony experiments with the valued metal ore Vizorium to create new mutated life forms, but winds up only with a horde of ravenous, reptilian ALIEN-type monsters. Its all done in the sleek, fluid, no-nonsense 1980s style that some longtime anime fans remain nostalgic for. This is easily the best of the DIRTY PAIR offerings so far available in the U.S.

Summary: The Dirty Pair back in action in too-talky sci-fi tale
Comment: DIRTY PAIR: FLIGHT 005 CONSPIRACY is an hour-long OAV spin-off that takes the titular teen babe heroines into strict sci-fi territory as they investigate a space shuttle explosion and an industrial war involving three space colonies. It's a lot less spirited than their previous spin-off, PROJECT EDEN, a 90-minute theatrical feature (also reviewed here), and a lot less fun. The curvaceous pair, Yuri and Kei, agents for WWWA (sort of an outer space Interpol), are covered up in space suits and regular clothes too much of the time and are forced to spend long scenes listening to or delivering highly technical exposition as they wend their way through a complicated web involving a missing scientist, a powerful new element called Igneite, secret tests and rogue intelligence agents. Things perk up only in the final 15 minutes when the pair go into action with a newly acquired ally to penetrate a secret space platform, rescue the scientist and his family, break up the secret lab and blow stuff up real good. This sequence offers good action animation, a fair amount of suspense and a rousing finale to the uneven proceedings. Is it worth the wait? If you're already a fan of the Dirty Pair, you've probably seen this by now. If you haven't and you've liked their other titles, including the far superior PROJECT EDEN, you probably owe it to yourself to see this. (The original "Dirty Pair" TV and video series remain unavailable in the U.S.) Overall, I can't help but think this would have been a more appropriate anime vehicle for a different set of lead characters, ones whose appeal isn't diminished by long dialogue passages and bulky space suits.

Summary: Don't miss this classic anime
Comment: If you're a Dirty Pair fan, this is a must-see. Kei and Yuri are a pair of trouble consultants in the year 2141 who have gained an unfortunate reputation for causing massive destruction every time they get an assignment. In this story, they are sent to the planet Ukbar to find Mizumi, a telepathic young girl with the power to plant hallucinations in people's minds. They arrive to find the person who sent them, a scientist named Connie Brighten, murdered, and the planet's head of security, Samara, orders them to leave. Instead, they follow thier leads to Nolanda, Ukbar's only forest, where they are told a shuttle might have gone and Mizumi could have been in it....
I can't really say what happens after that, but rest assured it has enough action and humor to keep any Dirty Pair fan happy. Buy this tape.

Summary: Even better than the first act
Comment: Act 2 continues right from where Dirty Pair Flash: Mission 2 - Act 1 left off. Kei and Yuri go into the background for a bit as Toma steals the first episode, making for what could be the funniest episode in all of Dirty Pair Flash. The second and last episode switches around and has a lot more action than the rest of the mission, with Kei, Yuri, and Toma finally getting around to their actual assignment.
