Customer Rating: Summary: The best World War II movie Comment: The film tells the story of Operation Market-Garden, and its ultimate failure, the Allied attempt to break through German lines and seize several bridges, with the main objective the bridge over the Lower Rhine (Neder Rijn) River, in the occupied Netherlands during World War II.
Very good audio and video quality, great actors and war scenes.
Customer Rating: Summary: The best WWII Film Comment: In my opinion, this is the best WWII movie ever made. Actually depicts the politics that went on behind the scenes as well as the action on the field.
Customer Rating: Summary: Very good Comment: Still the best made war movie of all time, just not an allied victory so it never got its' due. The Bluray version has better sound quality than the conventional one, but the picture isn't vastly improved so you can live without the Bluray if need be.
Customer Rating: Summary: Another Cornelius Ryan epic Comment: Based on the Ryan book, Richard Attenborough's epic war movie is the largest of it's kind since THE LONGEST DAY. However, this was a totally different chapter from WWII with vastly different results. Operation Market Garden, an ill-conceived Bernard Law Montgomery plan to seize the bridges leading into the industrial Ruhr Valley of Germany by using paratroopers to take and hold the bridge for British armor that would smash it's way into Germany. No one realized that two SS Panzer divisions had been placed in the area for R&R before the intended battle with Patton's 3rd Army. Great cast: Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Laurence Olivier, James Caan, Dirk Bogarde, Anthony Hopkins, and many others.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good Copy Comment: Nice reproduction. It was originally filmed in great quality. Not real sure if the Blue-ray version is that much better. I viewed it on a 720p 42" LCD. But the price made it worth it.

Editorial Reviews:
|
This massive 1977 adaptation by director Richard Attenborough (Gandhi) of Cornelius Ryan's novel features an all-star cast in an epic rendering of a daring but ultimately disastrous raid behind enemy lines in Holland during the Second World War. A lengthy and exhaustive look at the mechanics of warfare and the price and futility of war, the film is almost too large for its aims but manages to be both picaresque and affecting, particularly in the performance of James Caan. The impressive cast includes Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Dirk Bogarde, Sean Connery, and Liv Ullmann among others. While not a classic war film, it nevertheless manages to be a consistently interesting and exciting adventure. --Robert Lane
