Summary: educational standpoint
Comment: As a high-school teacher for English foundations, I try my best to expose my students to the literature their peers in regular English classes receive. I must utilize movies as a visual aide supplement to help them connect with the characters, setting, dialogue... I strongly recommend using this dvd to support your curriculum to teach on all levels of student learning (auditory, kinesthetic, visual).
My students LOVE this movie. They anticipate the next Shakespearen novel.

Summary: Love this version of Romeo and Juliet
Comment: I loved reading Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. It is a classic tragic love story and I have every line memorized. I was so excited when this movie came out and I wasn't disapointed.
I liked how it was modernized so viewers of today could relate to the play. I actually liked that the dialogue in this film mirrors the original text. Something would be missing if they changed the dialogue.
Of course some of the acting is overdone and can be a little "cheesy" at times but it fits great with the story.
I also enjoyed the music so if you liked the movie, you should pick up the soundtrack as well.
I definitely recommend this DVD to the hopeless romantics out there as well as any fan of Shakespeare.

Comment: I general like Shakespeare to be done in the time it was written for. However, I enjoy anything that Leonardo DiCaprio or Clair Dane does and totally enjoy this film eventhough it has been brought up to date. I give it four stars only because of this.

Comment: First of all, why the need to call it "William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet"?
I mean, was there a danger of the public confusing it with Barbara Cartland's or Edgar Allen Poe's Romeo & Juliet?
Are the producers of this piece of tripe so supercilious that they feel the viewing public wouldn't know who wrote Romeo & Juliet? Are they? Are they?
As to the film itself, little more need be said about the performances (uniformly terrible), the music (annoying) and the "modern" updating (ludicrous).

Baz Luhrmann (Strictly Ballroom) takes a shot at reinventing Shakespeare's story of star-crossed lovers as a visual pastiche inspired by MTV imagery, Hong Kong action-picture clichés, and Luhrmann's own taste for deliberate, gaudy excess. The result is explosive chaos, both in terms of bullets and visual sensibility, which some may find impossible to stick with for more than a few minutes. Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes play the leads, though not with much distinction, while Pete Postlethwaite makes a huge impression as this movie's version of Friar Laurence. The film is successful in spots, but overall its fever-dream game plan is difficult to ride out. --Tom Keogh
