Summary: Maybe I just can't relate...
Comment: I'd heard about this movie from EVERYBODY about how good it was and how much of a classic it was. I'm 24 years old and I didn't see it for the first time until 3 years ago. I'm pretty open to all kinds of movies, but the magic wasn't there for me with this one. Maybe I just need to see it again.

Summary: The Best.
Comment: If you want a realistic view of life in the 'hood' in the 1990's, this is the film. Next to "Boyz In The Hood," and "Set It Off," which share one or two similarities in plot, "Menace II Society" does the best job in depicting the story in true nature. The sequence of events within Menace II Society center around the experiences of one main character, "Caine," but the rest of the characters in the film are included brillantly and serve as the real voices. In the end, it's up to Caine to make the best decision before it's too late.
Although, Menace is a drama, there are a few comical parts, or maybe it's just me who finds MC Eiht to be hilarious in it. Arnold Johnson, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Big Daddy Cane give fine supporting roles.

Comment: I went into this movie expecting a little Dead Presidents-type drama and charactor development. What I got instead was a very ho-hum account of thug life. I don't know how this director managed to make drive by shootings boring, but he did it somehow. I just never felt any attachment to any of the actors to the point where I didn't give a hoot if they lived or died. The main charactor is sympathetic in one scene, then a total maniac in the next. There is never a common theme throughout the entire film, and every charactor has split personalities. The dialogue is pretty lame and the basic plot of the movie is revenge. This one is getting that one and that one's getting this one back. Just kind of juvenile and boring. I'll watch Dead Presidents again just to get this bad taste out of my mouth. If you're interested in a great thug movie with plot, dialogue, and development that's your answer to this mediocre attempt.

Tyrin Turner may not have broken out into stardom as was initially expected, but his work in Menace II Society is one of the more powerful cinematic debuts. The film, from the brother writer-director team of Allen and Albert Hughes, chronicles life in the Los Angeles 'hood. Similar territory was covered in the equally commanding Boyz N the Hood, but what makes this cautionary tale stand out is not only the Hughes brothers' forceful story, (written with their friend, Tyger Williams) and direction, but the naturalness of then-newcomer leads Turner as Caine, Larenz Tate as O-Dog, and Jada Pinkett as Ronnie. They are so credible--occasionally frighteningly so--that the repressive universe of violent ghetto life is captured effectively. Life as portrayed here--and no doubt accurately so--is both figuratively and literally narrow. As a very young boy, Caine witnesses his dad murdered over something inconsequential, and his mom OD. His is a world where respect comes from intimidation, power from violence. Despite his understanding of right and wrong (values passed on by a good friend, his kind grandparents, a caring teacher), his life and its entrapments are too much to overcome. --N.F. Mendoza
