Summary: Classic (Saiyan Saga, NOT Ginyu/Freiza)
Comment: Picking up from Doom (Vol. 5), Immortals continues the Saiyan Saga with a vengeance. The Z force is stalling for time, hoping that Goku will arrive soon to aid in the fight against Vegeta and Nappa. In a bid for time, they agree to fight one-on-one with the Saiyan's Saibamen - little green trolls that are as strong as Goku's late brother Radditz. The relative ease with which the Z fighters are able to combat the Saibamen skillfully illustrates how much the fighters have learned in the past year of training. However, the Saibamen fight dishonorably and manage to mortally wound one member of the Z force and kill a second. A third member of the Z force sacrifices his own life in a desperate bid to protect his friends from the vicious Nappa, but tragically the sacrifice is in vain.

This is an extremely poignant set of episodes. I especially like the internal tension in Gohan - though he has trained this past year to fight, he has never actually been IN battle and he is realistically terrified by the cruel Saiyans.

Note that this DVD is the Saiyan saga - not the Freiza/Ginyu sagas. I'm not sure why so many reviews here reference Capt. Ginyu - some strange Amazon weirdness? Also note that this is the 'cut', English-dubbed edition, which I (personally) prefer, but some do not.

LATER EDIT:
It becomes clear why there is confusion in the reviews - the two DVDs "Doom" and "Assault" are apparently set up to share reviews. How very odd. Below is my review for Assault:

There are a few major changes things to note here. Unlike all the previous English DBZs, this DVD has been left uncut, and includes both Japanese and English speakers and subtitles (including English for the hearing-impaired, which is greatly appreciated on my part). The uncut nature of the DVD will appeal to purists, but I'm afraid I personally prefer the cut versions because the extra violence is not to my taste. This is instantly obvious in the battle between Frieza and Nail - the scenes linger painfully over Nail's brutal wounds, and blood, sweat, and tears abound liberally. I find the overall effect distasteful, but it's something I'm willing to put up with for my fondness of the series. Just be aware of the change here. (The above will be true for all the remaining DVDs in the Ginyu/Frieza saga.)

Assault is powerful in many ways, not the least being Nail's selfless sacrifice to lead Frieza away from his beloved father and mentor Guru. Nail realizes that the fight he is facing will be hopeless and brutal, but he does not flinch from the coming task. Though Frieza tortures him mercilessly, he refuses to reveal the Dragonball password, and he endures as long as he can in order to spare his dear Guru.

Episodes 54-56

GINYU ASSAULT
Burter and Jeice of the fearsome Ginyu Force launch an attack on Goku. But the tables turn as Goku's new power is way too much for the to handle. After Goku easily defeats Burter. Jeice rushes to retrieve the fiercest of all Ginyu ... Captain Ginyu himself. But can their collective force match up to the new Goku? (Episode 54)

INCREDIBLE FORCE!
An angry Captain Ginyu initiates a battle with the fearless Goku, as the ruthless mercenary attempts to uncover Goku's true strentgh. But Goku cleverly conceals his power level from the militant monster. Finally, at the insistance of the Captain Goku astounds both Jeice and Ginyu by revealing his true power... A power unlike
anything they had anticipated. (Episode 55)

FRIEZA APPROACHES
Captain Ginyu and Jeice Face up to Goku only to discover the truth about what they're up against. Elsewhere, Gure bestows a special Gift of healing upon the young Namek, Dende, And Nail returns to defend Guru from the villianous Frieza. But Will Nail's special training be enough? (Episode 56)

Ahhhhhhh! (yell of a DBZ fighter powering up) another Fight Begins?
But how much of a fight can it really be when one side is winning without even trying. 2 on 1 & that's right Goku's so fast they can't see him move let alone touch him, with great surprise to Burter & Jeice and even the rest of the Z Fighters (Vegeta, Krillin & Gohan). Though they give it there all purple spiral attacks, fire crusher balls & all. It's all useless. One kick and an elbow puts Burter down for the count & Jeice high tails it back to Captain Ginyu. While Vegeta the merciless kills recoome, Burter & Guldo while there defenseless. Meanwhile Captain Ginyu has gathered all the dragon balls and Frieza is still heading over to Guru's to get the password to use them & Bulma has her own tribulations on Planet Namek. Captain Ginyu after learning from Jeice about this saiyan, decides to confront him his self. They then learn Goku is hiding his Power Level (PL) & estimates his PL to max at 60,000. While Ginyu's distracted Krillin & Gohan search for the dragon balls Ginyu has. Goku & Vegeta team up to take on Jeice & Ginyu but Vegeta takes off & leaves Kakarot(Goku) to face them on his own. Ginyu attacks & the 2 elite fighters really go at it. Ginyu has Goku in a headlock, but what's this he let's him go cause Jeice's offered help warps his ego into overdrive. But enough wasting time let's fight for real. 90, 100, 110, 117, 140, 150, 180,000!!!
Is Goku a Super Saiyan?
Ginyu freaks out knowing his max PL is only 120,000. He can't believe what he's seeing. But Ginyu's confidence is restored when he takes this rare Good natured saiyan(Goku) for being weak. Meanwhile Bulma takes off on her hover cycle & stumbles upon a mass of murdered Nameks. While Nail returns & Guru adorns Dende with healing powers & sends him to help the Z fighters with the dragon balls. Frieza arrives at Guru's & Nail & 3 other surviving Nameks put up a courageous but futile defense.

This is an overall good dvd. My very first dragon ball Z dvd to be exact. I Definetly recommend. Though the DBZ dvd's are overpriced & they should contain 8 episodes not 3. I suggest you take your time collecting them & buy 1-2 disc a month.

Summary: beggining of the third saga
Comment: this dvd marks th fight of ginyu and goku, wich gets more interesting for me since it was the first time i saw it.the only reason I gave it 4 stars is due to, bad menu and it doesn't say what happens on the next dvd. Other than that, a must see, must get dvd for a great collector.

Editorial Reviews:

The battle to save the Earth continues! The Earth's Special Forces concentrate on Nappa, one of the two Evil Saiyans who have come to destroy the planet, but find his power alone overwhelming. Can they hold the Saiyans off long enough for Goku to return to Earth?
