Summary: remember Abba
Comment: Abba's Greatest Hits captures the bands most melodic pop moments. Whether you like this style or not is completely up to you. Some people I know HATE the band with a passion, and hey, that's their opinion. My opinion however, is that they are a pretty fun pop band that immediately catches my attention with their exciting, upbeat, and melodic talent. It's immediately noticeable to me how talented they are.

Comment: Happy birthday!

Remember the time you forgot mine?

Fantasy masters, at the time ABBA appeared little more than a heteronormative Bee Gees or Wings with better champagne bubbles. Since Madonna, though, everyone knows "Lay All Your Love On Me" et al presaged modern times. All evolution, bi-ped onwards, ain't been about the use of tools or weapons; it's been supernaturally finetuned for the dance floor. Back in the late 80's, when I was but a crossdressing infant, it was those boppy ditties ("Ring Ring") and sad anthems ("One Of Us") that got me off, but, now, I hear the thumper numbers as the dopest. "Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie" is real life test! Toppermost is the perverse meshing of 1880 musichall with 1978 disco on "Money, Money, Money" complete with female self-empowerment on the final verse. I always intuited the right music was more essential than sugared makeup and ABBA, my dear, is superswoon, the ultrafemmest.

Do no evil.

Editorial Reviews:

Anyone looking for the key to Abba's enduring appeal should look no further than "Voulez Vous" and "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" for their answer. There was an innocence to the Swedish quartet, even when they were singing about one-night stands and the invitations to them. Gold establishes that the band, while appreciated as campy, were actually multifaceted in their execution. "S.O.S." has a raw urgency in its chorus, and "Does Your Mother Know" draws its energy from classic '50s rock & roll. Likewise, you don't have to be Priscilla to swoon over "Mamma Mia" or "Dancing Queen." And when it comes to drama, those soaring vocals on "The Winner Takes It All" turn the song into a bitter anthem of every relationship that has ever fallen apart. The much-covered "Lay All Your Love on Me" is practically epic. --Steve Gdula
