Customer Rating: Summary: Very interesting and tranquil interpretations Comment: The Japanese Album has 6 selections that are also on Rampal and Laskine's Japanese Melodies for Flute and Harp. However there are different, more complex treatments given here. This does not make the works superior to Rampal and Laskine's earlier recording, just subtle and enjoyable differences in interpretation. Rampal and Laskine's recording of 20 years ago is so extremely excellent and sublime that it is yardstick by which I judged this current CD of traditional Japanese music.
You will find 8 selections of traditional Japanese music where the flute of Jean-Pierre Rampal takes the lead. There are three of these works that Rampal and Lily Laskine recorded on their excellent CD Japanese Melodies for Flute and Harp. There are 5 selections however that are played by Rampal that were new to me.
Yo-Yo Ma's wonderful cello is heard on three selections, all three of which are also on Rampal and Laskine's earlier CD which will give you the opportunity to compare the differences when the work is translated by cello as compared to flute.
Issac Stern's violin is heard on two selections. The works range from the contemplative and melacholy to Spring-like and joyful.
The selections flow into each other smoothly and effortlessly. In the end, I would say that the Rampal and Laskine recording of 20 years ago is the most meditative, tragic, penetrating, and overpowering of the two CDs. The Japanese Album is more diverse and complex instrumentally, but the Rampal and Laskine recording is more subtle and emotionally overpowering.
In the end, I had to give this CD 5 stars. It is excellent. Well done.

Customer Rating: Summary: Super-relaxing Comment: A very good introduction to koto music and a lot less cheesy than the concept would suggest. The first track is by far the best.
