Summary: Surfacing - Get the Japanese Import instead though!
Comment: Sarah McLachlan certainly takes her time with her records. We waited
4 years after FTE for Surfacing, another 6 for Afterglow - and we're
still waiting for the new one! But Sarah's slow working technique
assures absolute quality in her records while a lot of more
modern artists just seem to crank out CD/Tour/CD/Tour without a pause.
Yes Sarah takes her time, but thank god - its always worth the wait.
Surfacing - her fourth studio album is an amazing piece of songwriting
and production, and I agree with the compression issues that have been
mentioned - get this album on viynl and you can hear the difference -
the record is so much superior to the CD - but records DO sound better.
I won't bore you with a track by track review of this album but what
I will say is if you must buy Surfacing - get the Japanese Import
edition for the beautiful Prayer Of St Francis which was recorded in
the same set but for some insane reason there was no place for it.
The song is short - only 2 minutes - but its arguably the most beautiful
track Sarah ever worked on. I love how she arranged the verses of Saint
Francis' prayer - so simple and elegant. Goosebumps assured.

Summary: Sensational Sarah
Comment: Surfacing is one of Sarah's early albums, released during 1997 by Arista. If you are unfamiliar with Sarah or want a good introduction, this is an excellent album to buy. It was produced, recorded and mixed by Pierre Marchand and both the recording and mix are excellent. This album is worthy of an expensive stereo system or headphones. I recommend buying the audio CD over the MP3s unless of course you only listen to MP3s. But, standard MP3 is an inferior medium, especially for this album. However, regardless of what you buy, you will not be disappointed unless of course you are a metalhead, or a hair band or rap fan.

Summary: BUILDING A MASTERPIECE
Comment: Even though this album came out in August 1997 I still listen to it constantly and it never stops to amaze me what McLachlan achieved on this set. The melodies, the sometimes complex lyrics and especially her beautiful voice are the main ingredients in this amazing collection of love songs. When I listen to the song ¨Angel¨ (featured in the movie City of Angels) sometimes I feel like an angel is whispering in my ear those magical lyrics to me. ¨Building a mystery¨and ¨Sweet Surrender¨also stand out in an album that is unforgettable. Don`t think she will ever be able to duplicate what she did here but I will continue to check her new music.

Summary: Amazing!
Comment: All I'm going to say is this, beautiful voice, beautiful songs, beautiful women. Sara sure knows how to write and sing songs that really grip you. Her voice as amazing as it is, is almost haunting at times which is truly a gift from above.

Well done Sara!!

Editorial Reviews:

There's the requisite number of gorgeously melodic and deeply heartfelt songs here--the addictive "Sweet Surrender," the Hollywood-style ballad "I Love You," the sad, profound "Angel," the flat-out spectacular "Witness." McLachlan's not prolific, but this short, bittersweet album proves again that what she and producer Pierre Marchand do release is cut from the finest of cloth. --Jeff Bateman
