Customer Rating: Summary: Seven Gay Shorts Comment: "THE BEST OF BOYS IN LOVE"
(First Run Features)
Seven Gay Shorts
Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride
First Run Features has released a compilation DVD of the best of their two movie series, "Boys in Love" and it is good. It is a diverse collection of stories, styles and settings which run the gamut from very sexy and romantic to a musical comedy parody of the old movie musicals, from backgrounds of Greenwich Village to the New Zealand forest. All of the films made the festival circuit at one time or another.
"Achilles" is the first film and is the story of Achilles and Petroclus during their battles with the Trojan armies. It is wonderful. "Achilles" is made in "clay-mation" and as Achilles defends his friend he also has to face his inner demons. It is absolutely amazing to watch.
"Boot Camp" is unquestionably my favorite of the shorts as it pays tribute to the Hollywood musicals of RKO. It is filmed in the surrealistic Kenneth Anger mode and is somewhat of a cross between a leather bar fantasy and a production number in a musical comedy. What you expect to be a really rough S/M encounter turns into some of the funniest choreography you will ever see.
"Death in Venice CA" is a take off of the famous Thomas Mann homoerotic film "Death in Venice". It stars a repressed professor who is enveloped by the charms and seductive techniques of his landlady's son. It is a stunning piece of film but a bit too short. The actors are prefect and every detail plays into the story. Illusions to the more famous film are a treat to look for and all in all, it's a pleasure.
"Dirty Baby Does Fire Island" is the story of a strange and bizarre journey of Dirty Baby (a rubber play doll, who washes u on the shore at the gay resort. She witnesses debauchery on this home of sex and drugs. She gets to see two muscle boys having sex and sniffing poppers (which Baby tries). This is a twisted movie that will make you laugh.
"Karen Black Like Me" is a very funny homage to the cult classic, "Trilogy of Terror" is which she was stalked by a killer voodoo doll, our hero, who is nelly and as fey as they come is stalked by a Jeff Stryker dildo.
"Twilight of the Gods, filmed in New Zealand is a sub tropical tale of a Maori warrior who helps a European soldier recover from being wounded. Shot in black and white, it looked like an old newsreel but it is a very touching film.
The least successful of the lot is SPF 2000, a take off of Italian sexploitation films. Here a day at the pond is ruined by the visit of a really ugly alien who paws his victims.
By and large, this is a very successful collection. It won't improve your mind but it will give you great viewing pleasure.
Customer Rating: Summary: The leather bar alone is worth it Comment: (...) I agree that the entire cd is not great but the "boy in leather" alone is worth watching this dvd if you are gay and had ever been in a leather bar in your life. Baby does fire Island is comical for those who remember drugs and poppers. The Clamation piece is Excellent. THe rest are so, so but in general I have shown these three shorts to dozens of friends and they have all raved.Rent it first and then you decide.
Customer Rating: Summary: DEATH IN VENICE, CA Comment: This is all about DEATH IN VENICE, CA. It's the hot picture on the cover. The quotes they use on the box are about it. It's the reason to buy this DVD.
Customer Rating: Summary: TRASH TRASH TRASH Comment: I have always had an interest in short films. I rented this collection because of it's gay themed stories. I was sorely dissapointed with it's lack of decenlty told stories. Achilles is the only short on this DVD that could hold my attention for it's entire length. It was the story of Achilles and the death of his gay lover. It is told in claymation using statues that look like the characters in mythology. It is beautifully told and brought to life. Dirty Baby Does Fire Island was the only one that was amusing in any way. It shows a baby doll wash up on a beach and come to life. She begins to wander around Fire Island watching body builders pump iron, men having sex, and trying mind altering substances. It is kind of sick and twisted but amusing. It is hard to say what the other shorts were about becasue they were extremely unmemorable. One is titled SPF 2000, which looks like a Mystery Science Theatre 2000 reject. This woman and her son go to the lake to sunbath and these two gay guys start flirting with the son, then this alien shows up and starts spreading sun lotion on all of them. It was odd and made no sense. Karen Black Like Me is about a magical sex toy that tries to kill the man who owns it. Boot Camp is a short that takes place in a gay leather bar. It's a musical and dance sequence and it has no real story or plot. Twilight of the Gods is about a wounded war soldier who is nursed back to health by a native boy, and one thing leads to another and you know the rest. It is silent and extremely boring. Death in Venice, CA is the story of a man who goes to live with a widow woman and her stepson. The stepson has sex with older men and takes a liking to the man. It pushes him over the edge. It was a decent short but still nothing to write home about. Overall, this collection is not worth renting, much less owning.
Customer Rating: Summary: so bad it's funny Comment: If this is "The Best Of Boys In Love" I'd really hate to see the worst of boys in love. Some of these films are so bad you just laugh. And you're not laughing with them. You're laughing at them. "Boot Camp" is so stupid that you'll skip past it halfway through. It's a musical set up in a gay bar. It's funny for about 2 seconds. Then it's time to turn it off. "Dirty Baby Does Fire Island" is about a perverted baby doll that comes to life and enjoys watching men having sex. Weird. "SPF 2000" is about an alien that comes to earth to put suntan lotion on people's bodies. "Twilight of the Gods" is just boring. "Achilles" is ok. "Karen Black Like Me" is like a Saturday Night Live skit. It's about a monster dildo that attacks a queen. It's pretty funny. "Death In Venice, CA" is very good. It's a beautiful love story about a young 17 year old and an older man. It's the only reason why I'm giving this DVD 5 stars. The rest of the films are trash.
