Summary: No Fleas In This Improv
Comment: Take a North Carolina country boy, a Midwest suburban (bipolar) couple, a nerd with two left feet and his former nymph wife, two rather flaming beauty salon operators, a gold-digging wife and her lesbian dog trainer, mix in some interesting canines (who, ironically, are the only stable beings in sight), plug them all into the high stakes tension that is the (fictitious) Mayflower Dog Show, and you've got BEST IN SHOW. Christopher Guest, who has made comedic improv "mockumentaries" an art form, hits the funny bone yet again with his ensemble cast of lovable loons who take competitive dog showing just a tad too seriously.
Improvisational comedy takes a special talent, so Guest employs several Second City veterans to wing it in front of the camera (including Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Michael McKean, and Fred Willard). While Guest's character (whose name is Harlan Pepper, a classic) and Fred Willard (an empty suit TV announcer) tend to get annoying, the rest of the cast improvs and interacts in pure comedic camaraderie. In particular, McKean and John Michael Higgins chew up every scene they're in as two very gay boutique operators and dog show enthusiasts; yes, they stumble over every gay stereotype in the book, but they do so with tongue-in-cheek good humor.
Special features. This edition includes commentaries by cowriters Guest and Levy; both comics basically go through the motions and offer little insight behind the scenes. Several deleted scenes are available; once viewed, it becomes readily apparent why they were not included in the final cut. Special feature disappointments aside, BEST IN SHOW is pure, tight, improvisational bliss--a howler in a good way.

Summary: Best in Trilogy
Comment: When I reviewed WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, I mentioned that I had BEST IN SHOW and THIS IS SPINAL TAP on order. And if we want to consider them some sort of trilogy, since they're "mockumentaries" with quite a bit of overlap in their casts... Now that I've seen them all, well, note the title of this review.
Humor is subjective, and it's true that movie one goes "over the top" quite a bit more than WAITING FOR GUFFMAN, as another reviewer noted, it's still my favorite of the three. With GUFFMAN in a close second, I'll add. Maybe I'm just partial to Hubert the bloodhound, or North Carolina.

Summary: One of the Best Comedies EVER!!!
Comment: I seldom re-watch movies. Once I see a movie, I feel it's a waste of valuable lifetime moments to watch it again. My definition of a 'favorite movie' therefore, is one I like to watch over and over again and love it every time. I am 50 years old and there are only about 3-4 movies that fall into this category for me. Best in Show is definitely one of them. It is one of the most hilarious movies I have ever seen. There are not just a few funny parts, this movie is jam packed with funny lines, ridiculous characters, and preposterous situations. Whether you have a twisted sense of humor (me), or just your everyday normal person sense of humor, you will love this movie. I don't know how to label the type of comedy in this dvd, so I'll just say this; Imagine all your favorite Seinfeld characters at their very best, then multiply it about 20 times. You will laugh all the way through this movie. Love it, love it, love it!!!!
