Customer Rating: Summary: A Great Gadget Comment: I bought the Wave for my husband a few years ago at Christmas. He used it on the job and it has come in handy on many occasions. It's well designed and well made - a quality multi tool in a world of hokey junk.
Customer Rating: Summary: Wave Review Comment: Good product. I miss the punch tool that was on my basic leatherman. Amazon provided great service.
Customer Rating: Summary: If I got lost in the woods... Comment: I think I would like to have one of these guys along with me. I just got one today, and I must say if you can get over the price for just a minute you will see your holding a pretty useful and durable little multi tool in your hand. I don't mess around when I buy something, I go striate out and test it, if it`s crap I take it back. I sawed, cut, squeezed, filed, prided, twisted and everything else. I will admit I don't think I'd take a hammer to it, but for your general "dose anybody have a ___________" situations it's good enough for the job.
Considering the metal is stainless steel you can't expect it to be all that tuff. If I had to last a few days in the woods I think the blades would stay plenty sharp to prep my camp site. The cutters on the pliers part surprised me a bit I cut a tomato cage down to size and there was no real ware done to the wire cutting part. The cross cut and diamond file worked just like they would if they where separate tools, though the cross cut forming opposite the diamond side left it a bit uneven on the edge. The big and little screwdriver bits are not better than a reasonable quality screw driver so no complaints there other than there is no reach to the big bits (stubby in other words). The locking mechanisms work fine and they are already smoothing out after the first day. I like the thin blades on the thing, I prefer not to work hard at all and let the sharpness of the blade do most of the work (if you know what I mean). The saw is vary sharp and cuts on the pull (need I saw more???)
Honestly it's not that expensive, I own knives that cost 40-50 dollars and up that just have the one blade. Also you got to remember this an't no fast talking info-mercial product here, people that buy stuff like this know it's not going to replace our good knives, good pliers, good screw drivers, sharpeners etc, etc, etc... You have to work within it's limits.
Customer Rating: Summary: My fourth Leatherman....Wave Comment: I bought my first one in '88 when I was building my house. The first time I was near the top of a 32 foot ladder and realised i could fix my power tool without climbing down again... i knew i was going to have a Leatherman for a long time. (I lost that one in a concrete pour.) I bought another, which i just passed on to my daughter 'cuz of my new purchase.I lost a micro at the airport. I am still annoyed about that.Well so much for sentiment..I have checked this one out...Let me share with you what i have found.
The two knife blades are sharp...very sharp. Better watch myself with this one. The removable bit system is a great idea and I am waiting for the add on bit set, with leather sheath. I tested for the ability to magnetize and because they are hard steel , I believe that idea will work out ,as it did with the original bits (especially handy when using the mini screwdriver bit) All of the blades lock, inner and outer. a very nice improvement over earlier Leathermans. The saw: I wont be doing any fine woodworking with it BUT I shall tell you of a use I just tested it on.... one half inch CPVC plastic pipe. It does a nice job and I can see it will be possible to easily cut plastic pipe in place and leaves a a very glueable end on the plastic. That will save much legwork.
The wire cutters worked on solid copper wire (10 guage) with minimal effort .The needle nose pliers are sturdy enough to form the end of wire for attachment under screws. The scissors are sharp enough, although a little awkward, to trim mustache hairs. The diamond file worked very nice for putting a sharp edge on a junky stainless import import knife. I will probably need to do that often ,especially the fillet knife.
I have spent a few hours thinking :What could possibly ,within reason, improve this tool? What accessories could be added? I could only come up with one ,an accessory that maybe could be carried in the leather accessory pouch ,when it arrives.I want A rectangular ,quality GLASS magnifying GLASS. I figure 4 inch by one and a half inch. This would make it the ultimate modern day survival tool pouch...useful on the boat for melting nylon line ends just cut, lighting a fire when you forgot your matches ,killing ticks just removed from the dog, or reading the fine print on your Genuine Microsoft CD while talking to their support outfit. ( or trying to see if that screw on your loose eyeglasses is Phillips or slotted)
A very nice tool...durable,handy, and made with quality stainless where appropriate. I definately recommend it.
