Customer Rating: Summary: Tales of Hoffman Comment: A treasure! If only for the two rare and marvelous acts by the incredibly lithe and lovely Moira Shearer. The video quality is surprisingly good, also.
Customer Rating: Summary: EXTRAORDINARY IN EVERY WAY ! ! ! Comment: Criterion pulled out all stops with this incredible release - well worth the wait and price. Absolutely glorious Technicolor, a flawless print, and an abundance of informative extras.
I can't recommend this beautiful film enough. It will be a crowning jewel in any film lovers collection!
Customer Rating: Summary: Five stars and Five Wows!!!!! Comment: Wow!!!!! What a great film!!! I love this opera and this film tells the story with a magic impossible on stage. Sung in English with English subtitles and other narrative devices, you will see Hoffmann for the first time clearer than ever. Highly recommended!!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Tales of Hoffmann Comment: Truly worth the premium price, this is a gorgeous recreation of a fascinating movie I had not seen for over fifty years. The restoration and transfer are beyond reproach, and the movie itself is even more interesting and engaging than I remembered. Extras are first-rate, and this is a welcome addition to the Powell and Pressburger Technicolor collection - did any producers do better and more pioneering colour work on such modest budgets. It might even be worthwhile seeking out "The Elusive Pimpernel" and "Gone to Earth", which I have never seen...
Customer Rating: Summary: Unforgettable Comment: Saw it on day QE II was proclaimed Queen, and several times soon after. Have been obsessed with it ever since. Finally got it on DVD 56 years later. Got a stage version on DVD earlier and found that the movie edited the original - I think improving it at end Act 3 and in epilogue. Has everything - great music and singing, fantastic plot, suspense, imaginative scenery.
