Summary: Fruit? Yes! But, which one?
Comment: Preface: I must take umbrage with the listing for this item, as its title says Blueberry Preserves but the jar clearly identifies the contents as Wild Blueberry Preserves. Is this important? I will explain below why it might be significant. Before I get to that, I have a few questions for idle musing: Can one be charged with theft for taking umbrage? To avoid theft charges, who can give permission for the taking of umbrage? What is the penalty for theft of umbrage? Inquiring minds want to know!

Okay, it is now time to de-digress. I have already stated my amateur credentials in my opinion of Bonne Maman Strawberry Preserves (15), and will therefore avoid redundancy. What I seek in any fruit preserves is:

1. A good, definitive, distinct fruit taste.
2. The right level of sweetness; I want them sweet enough, but not so sweet that the fruit taste is overwhelmed or sacrificed.
3. Enough whole fruit or chunks of fruit to convince me that I am eating preserves instead of jam pretending to be what it is not.

How does Bonne Maman Wild Blueberry Preserves do on these three criteria?

1. This is the definite weak point for this item. Blueberries are often not as distinctive in taste are strawberries, apricots, or red raspberries. It is very easy for blueberry anything to end up with a nice, sweet, otherwise-unidentifiable flavor, and I fear that Bonne Maman Wild Blueberry Preserves succumbs to this common flaw. I do wonder if part of the problem might be that I am generally accustomed to eating the larger, domesticated blueberries, instead of the smaller wild blueberries that inhabit this particular food item.

2. Because of the weakness noted above, this product is highly vulnerable to the too-sweet flaw, as well. Sadly, I must report that Bonne Maman Wild Blueberry Preserves does exhibit this flaw in abundance. If I were to taste this product, while blindfolded (me, not the product), I would promptly declare, "Well, it is plenty sweet enough, but what the heck is it?"

3. Here lies the factor wherein this product excels, as Bonne Maman Wild Blueberry Preserves is loaded with small, whole, wild blueberries. I am not sure if I have ever encountered preserves that are more abundant in fruit quantity and percentage! Bravo!

Ingredients: wild blueberries, sugar, cane sugar, fruit pectin.

Nutritional information: For each twenty-gram serving (one tablespoon), the consumer can expect to find thirteen grams of sugars, thirteen grams of carbohydrates, zero grams of fat, zero grams of protein, zero milligrams of sodium, and fifty calories. The thirteen grams of carbohydrates is approximately four percent of the daily recommended allowance.

I have had several brands of blueberry preserves. I think that I like Smuckers the best, as it has the most distinctive blueberry taste, but that might be because it uses domesticated blueberries, which are bigger and, I believe, tend to have a more distinctive taste. My experience with Bonne Maman Wild Blueberry Preserves was somewhat of a disappointment, although it was sweet enough, and it had plenty of blueberries in it.

Editorial Reviews:

BONNE MAMAN is the largest exporter of jam in the world. It's image, reputation and worldwide distribution make BONNE MAMAN one of the most famous brands that represent France abroad. The mini preserves come packaged by 15 units each of 1 oz.
