Customer Rating: Summary: SUPERcalifragelisticexpialidocious! Comment: Mary Poppins is one of those incredible movies that, like The Sound of Music (Two-Disc 40th Anniversary Special Edition), practically everyone has seen. (And if you haven't seen it yet, I HIGHLY recommend that you do!)
Julie Andrews, like her good friend Audrey Hepburn (who won Best Actress in her screen debut for 1953's Roman Holiday (Special Collector's Edition)) also won Best Actress (in her screen debut) for 1964's Mary Poppins.
In this fabulous 2-disc 40th Anniversary Special Edition DVD, it goes through the story of the whole ordeal that Walt Disney went through to be able to make Mary Poppins. It seems the author of the books , P.L. Travers, didn't want to sell the rights. But after 20+ years of persistence, Walt Disney finally received therights to film what we now know as "Mary Poppins".
Ever since I was about three I have been fascinated by Julie Andrews, throughout the whole movie, but especially in the "Just a Spoonful of Sugar" number. Who wouldn't give anything to just snap their fingers and clean their room? Oh...and if you watch the movie enough, you'll be able to say "Supercalifragelisticexpealidocious" backwards (it happened to me!).
Have a "Jolly Holiday" with the "Practically Perfect" Mary Poppins!
Customer Rating: Summary: A Practically Perfect Picture... in every way! Comment: Although I knew all the songs as a child, I do not recall every actually seeing this movie. (I think I saw it performed as part of Disney on Parade.., does anyone remember that?).
So what a delight to watch this DVD with my own kids. All the songs I remember, and a simple if enjoyable storyline.
As a father myself now, the tale of Mr. Banks placing his work before his family is a cautionary one for all working parents.
Pay close attention to the old man at the bank..., it's actually Dick Van Dyke!
This is Julie Andrew signature role, and it is great to see a move without explosions or violence, just fantasy and fun.
Highly Recommended!
Cheers!
Customer Rating: Summary: "Makes the medicine go down..." Comment: Mary Poppins is a Walt Disney classic. Julie Andrews plays the title role and she won an Oscar for her flawless performance. Andrews is pure delight, wish I had a nanny like her as a youngster. Dick Van Dyke is a gem as well, great songs and dance numbers. Mary Poppins is a family treasure to be enjoyed over and over again. I highly recommend it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Mary Poppins- 40th Anniversary Edition Comment: I bought this for my 5 year-old daughter as a Christmas present. It has been remastered, and the visual and audio upgrades are great. A wonderful addition to any Disney video collection.
Customer Rating: Summary: Awesome !! Comment: I love this movie from when I was a little kid, so I have bought it so my children can enjoy it two.

There is only one word that comes close to accurately describing the enchanting Mary Poppins, and that term was coined by the movie itself: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even at 2 hours and 20 minutes, Disney's pioneering mixture of live action and animation (based on the books by P.L. Travers) still holds kids spellbound. Julie Andrews won an Oscar as the world's most magically idealized nanny ("practically perfect in every way," and complete with lighter-than-air umbrella), and Dick Van Dyke is her clownishly charming beau, Bert the chimney sweep. The songs are also terrific, ranging from bright and cheery ("A Spoonful of Sugar") to dark and cheery (the Oscar-winning "Chim Chim Cher-ee") to touchingly melancholy ("Feed the Birds"). Many consider Mary Poppins to be the crowning achievement of Walt Disney's career--and it was the only one of his features to be nominated for a best picture Academy Award until Beauty and the Beast in 1991. --Jim Emerson
