Summary: awesome coffee
Comment: Best for taste and improving caffeine content. I get heartburn often and this product makes a low acid concentrate. It is so convenient to just make it once a week and use as needed in whatever strength I want. It is great for company because everyone gets their coffee the way they want.

Summary: Don't Buy It!
Comment: Product is way overpriced for what it produces. The coffee is tasteless no matter what kind, roast, price I use in it - instant coffee actually tastes better. I've tried following the instructions exactly and ad libbing as some of the other reviewers have done - to no avail. It's being donated to Goodwill.

Summary: $30 for this! It should cost $5 and even then it's not worth it!
Comment: I have been making iced coffee the cold brew way for a few months with two jars and a strainer. Since I consume so much, I thought I would give the famed Toddy system a try - surely so many people couldn't be wrong. Boy, am I sorely disappointed! I open the package and all you get is a cheap plastic pitcher and a glass carafe. $30 for this is way overpriced! Even so, the price would be fine if it did anything different or better than my makeshift system but it is actually worse, way worse!!! Here are my reasons:

1) The cheap plastic brew container has NO COVER and a FLIMSY STAND. I am going to leave an open, wobbly container full of coffee concentrate on my countertop for 12 hours, does this sound like a good idea? Does it sound sanitary? Unless your house is like a museum, probably not. By contrast my $2 jars have lids - imagine that.

2) The filters are so sensitive you cannot stir the grounds and water together to fully soak the grounds. What genius designed this filter? They expect you to go through a delicate dance where you add a few ground, slowly pour the water in a circular pattern, add some more grounds, slowly add some more water, etc. All so the filter doesn't CLOG. Who has time for this!? By contrast, when I put water and coffee grounds into my $2 jar, I drop it in and stir with a spoon - imagine that! My $1 strainer removes all the grounds/residue and leaves me with pure concentrate.

3) You have to keep buying their filers and they aren't cheap! Nowhere had I seen that you had to keep buying their filters - they cost $2 each and you can only use them 10 times! Why wouldn't I just keep using my $1 strainer, which works just fine and will last forever!?

4) Their filters require a lot of care. Every time you use them you have to go through some ridiculous process of storing them in a zip lock bag in the fridge. Again, who the heck has time for this?! My $1 strainer takes 5 seconds to rinse and then I stick it on the drying rack - imagine that!

All in all I am very disappointed with the Toddy system. Not only is it way overpriced, but it is worse than a $5 makeshift alternative.

DISCLOSURE: I have a burr coffee grinder that can evenly grind beans so that probably makes it easier to use a $1 strainer. But if you love coffee so much, why the heck would you still be using a blade grinder? At very least you should buy your coffee pre-ground, you would get better cold brewed coffee no matter how you did it.

I hope this helps people to see the light about this product.

Summary: Evangelizing for Cold Brew
Comment: I love my Toddy! I've been using it for three weeks. I've had iced coffee every day, and I've only made coffee twice! No more $2.50 Dunkin Donuts cups (where they never give me enough skim milk). I do miss my coffee cart guy, but some relationships have to die for others to grow, you know? I get my coffee before I leave the house, which makes me happy. We have a dearth of outlets in my apartment, so I wouldn't want an automatic drip maker anyway, even if it wasn't for the heat and the icky taste of cold coffee that's been hot brewed.

The Toddy is so easy to use. I'm really confused by the people who can't figure it out. Takes about 10 minutes to get it set up, then about 40 minutes to drain the next morning. And then you have two weeks worth of coffee! (Or one week for big coffee drinkers.) I just have one 12 oz cup of iced every morning. No longer do I have to send the hubby out on weekend mornings when we'd both rather laze around in our pajamas. I am in iced coffee heaven. And I just get Dunkin hazelnut for $9 a pound and I'm set. In the grocery store, a 12 oz bag of Folgers hazelnut is only $5, and it's just as good. But I like using the pound better, as you make coffee less often.

To break it down, I had 20 cups of coffee out of a $9 bag of grounds. Milk cost me about $3 overall. That's $12. If I had bought this coffee at DD, it would have been about $40 (for the 12 oz), and it would have been $25 from the coffee cart. Since I usually did half and half, that's $32.50, making my overall savings $20.50 over two weeks. So, by the end of next week, my Toddy will have paid for itself.

Oh, and my stomach also reacts much more kindly to this coffee. No more finishing off a cup and bolting to the ladies room. It also tastes much smoother than other coffees. I can't stand the burnt, acidic taste of Starbucks. But that could taste the same in a Toddy; it may just be the beans. I won't be testing it.

If you like iced coffee, this is a great product. I can't be bothered to buy cheesecloth and set up my own at-home system. If you hate DIY, this is a great product. If you are drinking hot and already have a drip coffee maker, and don't get a grumbly tummy from your coffee, this may not be for you. You might spend more on coffee. If this concerns you, stick to your coffee maker. But I'm saving money and having happy coffee moments in the morning, so it works for me!

Summary: Toddy
Comment: This coffee maker is great! I have no complaints. I tried to use a makeshift toddy system and once I gave up and bought this coffee maker I fell in love with the simplicity of it. I would recommend this to anyone who loves cold brew coffee. I usually buy coffee beans from my local coffee store and mix half a lb. with 8 cups of water and it works perfect! they sell replacement filters but the two that come with the system hold up really well and I cannot see myself buying more for a while. The decantor comes with a nice air tight top and the whole thing takes up about a milk cartons worth of space in the fridge. hope this helps

Editorial Reviews:

The Toddy Maker is a simple device that uses cold water and a carefully designed filter system to produce an exceptionally pure coffee concentrate from ground coffee. The advantages of coffee brewed with the Toddy Maker make it a popular choice among both individuals and the food service industry. Cold water brewing extracts the desirable flavor elements, but eliminates many of the undesirable oils and acids found in hot brewed coffee that are not soluble at low temperatures. Cold brewed coffee tastes smoother and is easier on the stomach. Toddy coffee has been recommended by doctors to their patients who are sensitive to the acid in hot brewed coffee. The original Toddy Maker consists of a plastic brewing container with a plug and filter at the bottom. One pound of regular grind coffee and nine cups of cold water are added and allowed to steep for eight to twelve hours. The plug is then removed and the resulting concentrate is allowed to drain through the filter into a glass carafe which is also provided. The grounds are then disposed of (they make good compost) and the filter rinsed thoroughly. The concentrate must be refrigerated. To make a cup of hot coffee simply mix one part concentrate with three parts water and heat in the microwave. To make iced coffee mix one part concentrate with three parts water and serve over ice. The concentrate is good for about three weeks in the refrigerator, and can be frozen for several months
