Summary: Thoughtful and Well-Done but Not Faithful to its Source Material
Comment:
I'm not a particular fan of Keanu Reeves's acting (exceptions include, mainly, THE MATRIX, in which I enjoyed his work very much).

I'm an admirer of the original DC-universe comic character Constantine only to the extent that I enjoyed his appearance in the first Sandman graphic novel. Constantine's stand-alone adventures are not so much gritty in a noir kind of way as they are graphically uninspiring, and that, perhaps with some dialogue issues, is why I've never found them engaging, despite their premise.

The film version departs radically from the comic, and, for me, that was a sound approach. Visually, it's far more arresting than the graphic novels and much more noir in flavor--although, obviously, it's a supernatural noir. Although critics weren't especially found of this movie, the script is more than solid, the cast and acting very fine, and the ancillaries (soundtrack, special effects, editing, etc.) all terrific.

You might consider giving it a try.

Summary: I really enjoyed this film
Comment: I see many people only gave this movie 3 stars but I have to say I really liked this movie. Maybe it's because I'm a horror writer and have been a horror fanatic for all my life but this movie was different from most of the horror that is being circulated around today. What makes it different? Well, for starters, it is thought provoking. You can't just waste 2 mindless hours watching a Jason or Michael Myers hacking up everyone who crosses their path. This movie has a level of depth to it that is rarely seen in today's cut and hack horror. That was automatically a bonus for me. Reeves character is conflicted, not one that is some religious freak pouring out all his righteous anger on the demonic entities he encounters. Even Gabriel, God's angel, was conflicted in this movie, losing sight of who's side he/she was really on. In most of the cases, there were no true lines dividing good from evil and in my mind, that is more true to life that typical representations. This movie was entertaining, action-packed, interesting and fun. I highly recommend it to all horror fans.

Summary: Great For HD
Comment: I had seen this movie when it was first released and was impressed by the special effects. But with my endless quest to find hd movies (blue ray is taking over) I knew I had to purchase this one. And I am not disappointed. The extra features are easy to operate and the movie looks fantastic, not 3D like blue ray seems to bring out in their dvds. Hd movies are just that, it has outstanding clarity but doesn't give that fakey look that blue ray does.

Summary: Hellblazer, it ain't.
Comment: Hmm, my earlier review has gone up in smoke. Let's see if I can remember what I said... Okay, probably fewer than 10% of the viewers are aware that this film is (at least theoretically) based on a comic series from Vertigo entitled Hellblazer. John Constantine is a bit of a meddler, really, investigating all kinds of weird happenings, and generally pissing off the bad guys. He's also supposed to be a magician, although you won't see him casting fireball.. at least in this movie.

Keanu does an okay performance here, but what's really lacking is his ... hm, body-type? Constantine is actually a blue eyed, blond haired guy with a british accent. Keanu in no way resembles that. They would have been better off hiring his opposite from Bill and Ted. While his performance captures some of John's world-weary, grim and fed-up persona.. well, it's not exactly spot-on. Also, Shia... erg, just as badly miscast as Keanu. However, the movie is fairly entertaining, containing both Gabriel and Lucifer. Unfortunately, while the books are full of occulty subtext, the producers mainly give the impression that they don't know what they're talking about. Okay, yeah, angels and demons. But... then what? And the spear of destiny? That would be a major find, but it somehow.. .doesn't go anywhere. Also, the demons are.. eh, look like a video game or something.

So, this is the first Vertigo title to see film, and judging from its success, probably won't be the last. Hopefully they'll manage to not mangle the premise quite so badly next time. Yeah, Sandman! (I wish...)

Summary: Why does anyone still hire Keanu Reeves?
Comment: I'm sorry but the guy can't act. Period.
I'll always see him in Bill and Ted.
He's a screwball who should have went away after those two movies.
That said, Hollyweird screws up the comics again.
Another movie to watch with the volume turned off.
Pretty FX don't make a good movie.
Fun to look at, painful to listen to.
Rent it if your curious, don't be prepared to enjoy it.

Editorial Reviews:

Based on the DC Comics/Vertigo Hellblazer graphic novels and written by Kevin Brodbin and Frank Cappello Constantine tells the story of John Constantine (Keanu Reeves) a man who has literally been to hell and back. When he teams up with skeptical policewoman Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz) to solve the mysterious suicide of her twin sister their investigation takes them through the world of demons and angels that exists just beneath the landscape of contemporary Los Angeles. Caught in a catastrophic series of otherworldly events the two become inextricably involved and seek to find their own peace at whatever cost.Running Time: 121 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: ACTION/ADVENTURE UPC: 085393894221 Manufacturer No: 38942
