Summary: disappointing
Comment: I really wanted this lens to be good. It's certainly an impressive piece of optical design to cram such a huge focus range into such a compact lens, and I was tempted by the prospect of never having to change lenses. But optically it has too many problems to be more than a snapshot lens, and for that a pocketable non-SLR is more appropriate and convenient, not to mention much lighter.

Main problems: Bad distortion at many focal lengths, to the extent that my friends laughed at some of the pictures I took with it. "Hey, why's your bookshelf bent at the top??" Chromatic aberration (color fringing) throughout the zoom range. There's light fall-off in the corners. At the wider end of the range, it casts a shadow with the builtin flash on the D40 body. If you carry it on a camera over your shoulder, it will extend all the way out under its own weight. In addition, it lacks the really nice super-close focusing ability of the 18-55.

I've decided I'll be happier with the stock 18-55 (itself not that great) and the 55-200 which is lighter, cheaper, sharper, and all around better. I guess technology has not yet reached the point where you can get all that in one lens.

Summary: Finally, a lens to maximize your DSLR
Comment: Finally, a quality lens with a large range: 18 to 200. Wow!

This is a great all around lens to NOW be able to go anywhere with your DSLR camera and get all the benefits of that camera without the huge camera bag.

Construction is like a pro lens. It feels and looks very well made.

The Vibration Reduction is such a huge help. Since it is not a f/2.8, the VR allows you to take pictures at lower shutterspeeds to offset the higher f-stop.

My pictures have turned out beautifully with the quality, clarity, color, and versatility you expect to get from a DSLR camera.

Pictures only happen if the camera is there, and the versatility and range of this lens allows your camera to be there with professional results.

Summary: Great lens, very good pictures
Comment: I am a newbie when in comes to dslr and lenses. I am very satisfied with lens. Very sharp pictures, vibrant colors.

No creep in my version of the lens. May be creep is fixed in current versions.

Summary: Jack of all Trades, Master of None!!!
Comment: This lens replace virtually every lens in my bag, except for my Nikkor 10.5 f2.8 Fish Eye.

To those who do not like this lens. You completely missed the point on what Nikon is trying to put across here. And to those who call themselves professional photogs. You have no business buying this lens in the first place.

This is the lens for the common man. Jack of all Trades, Master of None!!!

Ken Rockwell said it best,

"It's fun, sharp and practical. It's enabled me to create more great photos than I ever thought possible. What more can I say?

Nikon pulled out all their tricks in the 18-200mm VR. It really works. Nikkor lenses have been around since 1932 and Nikon's been around 15 years longer than that. They've learned a thing or two. Nikkor lenses are the reason we shoot Nikon cameras. Lenses are far, far more complex than simple focal length range and aperture specifications.

I love wide angles and use my 12-24 mm quite often. I wish I had something even wider. You people know who you are. My 12-24mm and 18-200mm VR are all I use today.

Like most good things it's expensive and hard to get. You probably can pay for it by selling the lenses it replaces.

If you're on a budget I'd suggest the cheap and excellent 18-55mm instead. If you need to go longer, add the 70-300mm G. You'll lose convenience, but the pair combined probably weighs less then the 18-200mm VR and costs only a fraction as much. Picture quality will be the same most of the time. Cameras and lenses have little to do with the quality of your pictures. Dollar for dollar these two lenses are better than the 18-200mm VR. All these lenses have great image quality used properly. The 18-200mm adds a new level of flexibility."

Comment: Good lens, it covers a large number of situations.
The only problems is the weight.
