Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent Product - Everything in One Comment: This product is terrific - it has all that you will ever need in a multi tool.
If you think that it is a little too bulky, you may be right, but it is perfect for me.
Customer Rating: Summary: Sharp edges Comment: This tool is heavy duty and is designed well, but the sharp edges on the handle could cut your hand. I have several victorinox products, and their fit and finish is much better. The Surge I got also had loose sissors just like another reviewer. For a tool that lists for $93, this is unbelievable.
Customer Rating: Summary: Leatherman Wave on Steroids Comment: I feel the need to address the reviewer who called the Surge Junk. I'm not sure what kind of tool he was using, but it was not a Leatherman. I've upgraded my way through 4 Leatherman tools (the PST, the Wave, The Wave II, and now the Surge.) I have never had one rust, at all. The surge is 100% stainless steel, and would have to be abused BADLY!! to rust.
All that being said the Surge is now my multi-tool of choice (which is saying a lot since it replaced the Wave II.) With needlenose pliers, 2 knife blades, scissors, file and saw that can be swapped, awl, bottle opener, flat screwdiver, and a bit driver that can be used with a multitude of bits this tool will get you out of any situation you may find yourself in.
I wholeheartedly recommend this tool to anyone who is in the market for a multi-tool. If the Surge's size is a bit much for your tastes go for the Wave which is another 5-star Leatherman product which is just as useful and weighs 4oz. less.
Customer Rating: Summary: Leatherman Surge, hey I like it. Comment: I have had a bunch of multi-tools and this one is, I think the best so far. It`s sturdy and well designed and the leather sheath will fit a Mag Lite Solitare in the side. Nifty. Some people are complaining that the Surge is too big and too heavy. To quote Mr. Miyagi " What are you, some kind of girl or something?" If this is too much for you to handle, start wearing some lacy undergarments you sissy. It`s a tool, it`s supposed to have some heft to it. You not using it to perform surgery. Would you prefer that it was cheap and flimsy? I think Leatherman did a pretty good job with this. So there. Put down the purse honey and get a Leatherman Surge. Mantlebaum, Mantlebaum!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Right tool for the job Comment: I'm a rancher. I carry a multitool every waking hour. I've exercised the warranty on a Wave three times in three years. I've broken the detente that prevents the knife blades from bending beyond straight. I've broken the tips of the pliers pulling cotter pins, and I've chewed up the hard wire cutter. The Surge seems to do all these things and more with greater ease than the Wave, and it seems to be taking the day-to-day punishment. If not the fourth Wave is waiting as a backup.
As for the size aspect: I wear gloves in large size. The Surge is not too big for my hands and I can't imagine it'd be too big for medium size hands. IMO, frequent and continued use of the pliers with small hands could be tiring.
I depend on these things everyday. A Leatherman has never let me down even when they've broken. If you use one this much then I'd highly recommend the nylon sheath. The leather case and snap are not as convenient.
BTW, it may not be the perfect tool for the job, but when its the one that 's handy it gets the job done.
