Customer Rating: Summary: I just love it Comment: I just think it's wonderful...without ever having read the book. I have watched it many times.
Customer Rating: Summary: Sent me racing back to read the book again. Comment: This wonderful Masterpiece Theater version sent me back to read the book again for what is now the third time. I had forgotten the book through the years and only at the last minute decided to watch this new filmed version of the book when the 2006 production was being rebroadcast on PBS this past May. I was so enthralled and quickly purchased the Special Edition with the added commentary, deleted scenes, etc. (but, unfortunately no subtitles that I could find). The fact that this version's screenplay was written by a woman and was also directed by a woman I think contributes to this more sensual version which I truly enjoyed and appreciated. Jane Eyre remains one of literature's most interesting female characters with her independence and desire for more out of life than what is being offered to penniless young girls of the 1800's. Her belief that whatever fulfillment she can achieve out of life can be obtained by other means than by simply finding some man to marry and support her sets the stage for compelling story-telling. Her youthful spirit and kind nature and honesty captures the heart of the having-lived-too-hard Mr. Rochester. I honestly cannot get enough of this delightful version of this wonderful story. I particularly liked the not-in-the-book ending as it shows us yet again another example of Jane's kindness and generous spirit, and I do find myself with a smile on my face at the end and wanting to experience this production again and again. Well done, cast and crew!!

After a wretched childhood orphaned Jane Eyre yearns for new experiences. She accepts a governess position at Thornfield Hall where she tutors a lively French girl named Adele. She soon finds herself falling in love with the brooding master of the house - the passionate Mr. Rochester. Jane gradually wins his heart but they must overcome the dark secrets of the past before they can find happiness. When Jane saves Rochester from an eerie fire she begins to suspect that there are many mysteries behind the walls of Thornfield Hall. Her fears are confirmed when Rochester's secret past is revealed destroying her chance for happiness and forcing Jane to flee Thornfield. Penniless and hungry she finds shelter and friendship in the shape of a kind clergyman and his family. But she is soon shocked to uncover the deeply hidden truth of her own past. This lavish and sensual new version of Charlotte Bronte s classic novel is modern and moody timeless and romantic. Starring Toby Stephens as Mr. Rochester Ruth Wilson as Jane and Francesca Annis as Lady Ingram.System Requirements:Run Time: 240 minutesFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA Rating: UNRATED UPC: 783421416192 Manufacturer No: WG41619
