Summary: Excellent Fax for the price
Comment: Very good compact fax for occasional use. Very easy setup instructions.
Does not have a lot of bells and whistles but fits the bill for simple fax job at a very good price. Have been very pleased with it.

Summary: poor product and poor service
Comment: HP 640 Inkjet printer is defective. When unable to begin operations based on set-up instructions in manual,
called HP Service number provided. After ultimately finding the appropriate tech service person, he prescribed various diagnostics to get machine operative. All failed. He informed me that it was defective.
HP refused to replace the new machine that was bought. HP said the only remedy was to return the defective new machine to them at customer's own expense. And that HP would only replace it with a used refurbish machine. Service people were rude and continually placed customer on hold. Poor product, poor service.

I found the machine somewhat difficult to set up & program in all the settings, my phone #, etc., that I needed to do; but probably no more difficult than other fax machines. And a major frustration: when you have it set to "auto", so it can switch between phone & fax, if you answer a phone call from a different phone, this keeps ringing & ringing thru-out the whole length of the phone call (???)--incredibly annoying.
But as I use it only occasionally, I just keep it unplugged until I need to use it. And for the $$, & esp. since it uses ink cartridges unstead of one of those awful film rolls like on my 5 y.o Sharp, it's probably a pretty good buy.

Summary: Good little machine for light faxing
Comment: If you can get this machine for about 50 dollars, it's worth it for light faxing. The memory holds about 12 pages worth of documents so if you're a legal eagle who routinely sends 40 page faxes, buy something more heavy duty. But if you send and receive an occasional fax here or there, this is a nice machine with a very simple and compact design.
Print quality and speed are adequate and the machine does a decent job as a light duty copier as well. The one downside on printing is that the cartridges are expensive, about 30 dollars each and they print about 250 pages. There are no clone cartridges available that I can find. But you can find HP original cartridges on Ebay for about 15 dollars if you want to go that route.

Comment: HP gets it right! I don't know how it would stand up to heavy use, but if you fax occasionaly, this is the one for you. Simple, even for a technically challanged dude like me. Small footprint...stores easily. I keep it in it's box and take it out when I need it. Maybe take off half a star for its hard to read display but that's it. Watch Staples and wait for a good [..] deal. I paid [..]...got [...]back !!!
