Summary: LaCie Big Disk Extreme+
Comment: I purchased the first of my many LaCie external drives over 10 years ago. Just like the other ones, this drive works well, is very quiet, has excellent software support, and a functional case. The new ones are just a whole lot prettier than the early ones! Wouldn't but anything else!

Comment: I am deployed to Iraq and travel frequently by convoy between different sites. This drive and my Macbook Pro go with me everywhere. I don't know what kind of chaos is going on in some of the other reviewer's offices but this thing has withstood multiple IED attacks on my vehicle, 120 and above heat conditions, days at a time in an assault pack, and many other forms of warranty-voiding abuse. After a year of this sort of behavior, it still performs flawlessly with fast seek times and no lost data.

Comment: The worst thing about this drive is its power save mode. I will be using a file on the drive in photoshop or something and after about 5-10 minutes of using the file, the hard drive goes into power save, and whenever i try to save it it would boot back up and take like 10 seconds until the save goes through because the drive is booting. It is EXTREMELY annoying and there is no way to disable it.
Aside from the terrible power save idea, Lacie support is ok. I was having trouble with the hard drive making a frequent annoying noise, and so I exchanged emails with a customer service rep who was very helpful for the amount he could do. If something is wrong with your drive, Lacie does NOT provide you with the box, etc to ship it in. My guy was nice enough to do so. After i shipped it and spent $12, i got it back a week later and it was not fixed even though they said it was. Very frustrating.
Folks I cannot emphasize the annoyance and inconvenience of the power save mode. If you ever want to use the drive and it has not been used for 5 minutes or so, it takes 5-10 seconds for it to respond while it boots. Terrible idea on Lacie's part and it has ruined my experience with the product.

Comment: I have an new fully tricked out Alienware laptop and a Sony pc and tried for many hours to make either computer even see the harddrive. The information inclosed mentioned having to format it for a pc but not for a mac. I tried to do that following the directions and still couldnt make it work. Sure do wish I had known that befor I sent for it. I love, admire and totally respect people that it comes easily to to do that kind of thing. But for me I want and expect to plug something in and have it work. I am a photographer/videographer. I just purchased another WD external harddrive and within a little while with no worries had my tons of photo and video backed up. So guess I will stick with them.

Comment: I've used LaCie firewire 800 drives (all different storage sizes) for over 5 years and not one problem.
I use two 300MB as a daily storage, a 500MB as back up storage and the 1TB as a back up to the back up storage. My work files are priceless and my clients depend on me to keep their files safe.
