Customer Rating: Summary: great machine Comment: Have had this printer only a month and I really like it. It is a little noisy but that is the only thing. For the price you can't beat it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Canon Pixma MX310 Comment: I haven't had this printer long, and my major printer needs revolve around boring old B&W text primarily (the rest of the functions that many would consider essential are, to me, nice but extraneous).
That being said, for the purpose it serves in my usage it works great. It was a decent price, setup was a breeze, print quality is good, and the ink isn't particularly expensive. The scanner, copier, and fax functions all work well, and the interface is intuitive both for operation and changing settings.
Regarding the fax ringer settings, I too had some issues upon setup and I would love to have seen an "off". Initially I tried turning all of the volume (key beeps and general stuff, as well as the fax specific settings) down to "Quiet", and then eventually just decided to set the fax receive mode to "Fax Priority". My home phone line came free with the cable package and I have a cell phone, so I never use that number for anything anyway; on Fax Priority, it picks up immediately, so I never hear it ring at all (and in a pinch I could still pick up the receive on the attached phone and place a call). It isn't ideal if you use your home phone line for voice, but if like me your hardline was an afterthought or specifically for a fax, turning it to Fax Priority will solve the annoying ring problem nicely.

Customer Rating: Summary: great printer and copier; disappointing scanner Comment: The print and copy functions on this multifunction work well-- the machine is fast and the output quality is generally very high.
The PIXMA MX310 is also fast as a scanner, but there are at least three significant problems:
1. Scans contain a lot of "salt" (white dots) that are not present in the original. When I scanned the same document with an HP Officejet 7310xi, the scanning process took 3-4 times as long, but there was no salt problem.
2. There is no way to scan to an SD card or USB thumb drive. One can only scan to an attached computer.
3. When one saves a scanned document or photo, the software does not remember the location where files were previously saved, and does not provide an address bar where one can type the folder name, so that one is forced to browse for the folder every time. This is very annoying.
As a printer and copier, I'd give this 5 stars, but as a scanner it rates only 2, for an average of 3.5 stars. (Amazon doesn't allow a rating of 3.5, so I gave it 3 stars).
Customer Rating: Summary: Easy set-up&Great For Home Use Comment: I just bought this and couldn't be happier. One guy complained about a 132pg. quick start guide. When actually it's a 4pg. fold out. That you only use 2 pages of if your not going to use it as a Fax Machine. I was up and printing in 15min. No lie! I followed the "real" quick start guide and kept all default settings,as this is for home use only. Web pages, schedules, etc. Color is the default setting to print. So,to print in B&W you need to bring up your printer page, click "properties",then click "Grayscale Printing". And that will let you print in B&W to save color ink. I don't know how to make it the default setting. I have to click it every time to print in B&W. Other than that, I couldn't be happier
Customer Rating: Summary: Great little printer Comment: I was having problems with my other printer (HP) so I got this one. It is small and fits just right on my desk. It was very easy to install and use. Don't forget to order a USB cable because you will need it to use the printer. It is not the fastest printer, but compact, which makes it very convenient.

This is true high-performance versatility. You'll quickly print photos with color resolution up to 4800 x 1200 color dpi. The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) holds up to 30 originals, so it's much easier to copy, scan or fax large documents. Copies will be remarkably true to the originals, and documents will feature bold, laser-quality text. You'll produce 1200-dpi scans with vibrant 48-bit color depth, and achieve Super G3 fax speed in color and B&W.
