Customer Rating: Summary: If you don't like this... Comment: ...then there's something wrong with...
Well, there's NOTHING wrong with IT, I guarantee ya... At least when you consider these guys are 60 (they can't do anything about that except keep themselves in performing shape which they have...) how much material the product has (which it does... something for absolutely EVERYone...)
and it's all of ELEVEN FRICKIN' BUCKS!!! What Do You Want??? fercryin'outloud!!!
Now what it has for THIS Troll is a fairly good smattering of the OLDE STUFF. I (like lots of people I know) am only interested in Elton's compositions prior to his '76 release . I don't care about his personal predilections, his Soap Opera life-story or what his Sir-title is supposed to mean. I care (a LOT) about the thing that REALLY made him famous... those 1970 - 1975 "Captain" Fantastic songs that were only excelled by the 1963 - 1969 Lennon-MacCartney songbook in all of popular music history.
That portion of EJ's output is nicely represented in this product, both in the early video/concert anthology, AND in the featured "Elton 60" show from MSG. Some of those old and cuts had me in blithering idiot tears. How magnificent that the first segment of the show (prior to the Birthday presentation) was LOADED with them... all nice versions which the band clearly had a good time revisiting. That made them even better.
If, like me, you've been wanting something live by Elton to remember those years by, then plunk down your 11 hard-earned bucks. BIG reward!
Customer Rating: Summary: I would normally give this one 5 stars.... Comment: The reason why I'm not giving this 5 stars has nothing to do with the concert or the sound or the picture quality because just that alone,it would get 5 stars. The reason why is because there is no second disc of rare footage, like on the dvd version.Being a big Elton John fan ever since the mid-70's,I like seeing footage from the old days.I want to see the crazy glasses and wardrobe, the original band and so on.I don't think that's asking for too much,is it?? Back when DREAM TICKET came out,I was looking forward to rare concerts, old interviews;etc.,but the only thing rare was the solo concert..What's the deal?? I'm not whining, but I would like to see things I haven't seen before or haven't seen in a long time, especially when paying 40-50 bucks or so.I think I'm(or us EJ fans)are entitled, right? I'm not saying don't get this concert, but hang on to the dvd version as well,if you like seeing the old stuff..RECOMMENDED!
Customer Rating: Summary: 60 years on Comment: He may be bit older, a bit heavier, and his voice a bit deeper now, but this show is fantastic. With a big group of chorus singers to flesh out those songs with unforgettable harmonies, and several of the original Elton John band along with him, these guys pull off a serious rock show. And the stage set is pretty remarkable too. If you were ever a fan, this is one for the library. The quality of audio and video of the Bluray version is superb. I highly recommend it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good show and great rare footage Comment: Without the rare and unseen footage this wouldn't get five stars from me. It IS a special concert and a true celebration of Elton John's unique musical gifts and of course his 60th Birthday. Sadly as Elton John has got older his voice has become a less expressive musical instrument. I say this as huge fan of the artist. Its not a criticism, sadly age catches up with all of us and Elton is as human as the rest of us.
If you decide to watch some of the rare and unseen concert footage before you watch the main concert, this is when the limitations in Eltons voice becomes painfully obvious. That said there are some performances in the birthday concert that are better than the archive ones. Honky Cat being one example.
Credit then to Elton John that when he sings a song like 'Where to now St Peter', where in the past the melody required him to sing falsetto he has now changed the melody to work with his less flexible voice. Lesser artists would cheat and have somebody else sing the high notes. Its a great occasion and for a man of 60 he still is the ultimate rock showman. How many other artists of Elton's era are doing 3 hour stage shows. Not many did in the 70's let alone now. Songs that haven't been performed live since the 70's are resurrected like "Ballad of a well known Gun" and some of the best songs from his recent albums like "Tinderbox" (incredibly catchy) are performed on a great stage set which is a wonder of lighting and video.
The rare and unseen footage is a treasure trove of classic footage. Noteably excellent are the 'Sounds for Saturday' performances with only Dee and Nigel (on bass and drums respectively). Four solo Piano performances from the Edinburgh playhouse are very good and a 2001 performance for a Top of the Pops special of "This Train don't Stop There Anymore", which is my favourite recent Elton John song is magnificent.
Customer Rating: Summary: Elton 60 Comment: I love this DVD! It is a wonderful concert and has some really great footage from EJ's great career! I love it! It's very worth it.
