Summary: Shallow but enjoyable
Comment: Shootem Up! Shootem Up! Pow! Pow! This movie, and these characters, are so over the top they are almost cartoonish. The stunts are ridiculous, and the plot line is pretty far out there. Even with all that, this is a "fun" movie to watch. It reminds me of the old action movies, where the hero was capable of anything but death. Only complaint, it was about 30 minutes too long...

Summary: Bruce Willis gives 2 middle fingers to his audience
Comment: The original "Die Hard" was one of, if not the best, action films of all time. "Live Free or Die Hard" has to be one of the worst. The villains were lame, the plot was idiotic, and our hero's antics were so ridiculously implausible as to be insulting. This was an ordeal to endure. You've been warned. You're welcome.

Summary: Certainly doesn't disappoint
Comment: If you loved the three installments of the Die Hard series then this one made after 12 years after third will not disappoint. The action is top notch without using too many computer aided tricks. The only big drawback was the villain. The Die Hard franchise is known for its villains but this one truly disappoints. Scenes where rage, clenched fists and teeth are expected are passed off peacefully without any reaction. It looked very poorly handled. However when the villain is dispatched you are left wondering what a waste of talent (of the character in the movie). Hacker's equipment was also fascinating. I would love to have one of those folding keyboards. Bruce Willis is older but he never compromises on the action. If not for the villain's acting Live Free or Die Hard deserves 5 stars.

Summary: Did we really have to
Comment: Was it really necessary to make this movie? I mean, you could've just rented, bought or re-watch the very first one because "Live Free" is a rehash of "Die Hard" down to the elevator shaft and the bad guys with foreign accents. Bruce Willis has sort of attained a super natural hero stamina and strength, sure he moans and groans when being pummelled but that's just for sound effects. Ironically he is what's impressive in this movie because he is aging well. You can obviously tell that he's an older gentleman but still gritty, handsome and he never lost that charming sneer in his smile. Sure the movie effects are visually stunning, the plot is so- so but, the bad guy wasn't bad enough. I think I am being generous by giving it three stars, it all goes to Bruce Willis. I recommend you watch the first one if you haven't seen it in a while or if you haven't seen "Die Hard" at all.

Summary: John McClane is BACK to DIE HARD!!!
Comment: Bruce Willis makes an awesome hero comeback as John McClane who tries to stop Internet terrorists who are shutting down the United States on the 4th of July weekend! John receives help from a nice computer hacker named Matt Farrell. The movie is literally action-packed! If you love the Die Hard series, you'll definitely love LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD!!!

Editorial Reviews:

Twelve years after Die Hard with a Vengeance, the third and previous film in the Die Hard franchise, Live Free or Die Hard finds John McClane (Bruce Willis) a few years older, not any happier, and just as kick-ass as ever. Right after he has a fight with his college-age daughter (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a call comes in to pick up a hacker (Justin Long, a.k.a. the "Apple guy") who might help the FBI learn something about a brief security blip in their systems. Now any Die Hard fan knows that this is when the assassins with foreign accents and high-powered weaponry show up, telling McClane that once again he's stumbled into an assignment that's anything but routine. Once that wreckage has cleared, it is revealed that the hacker is only one of many hackers who are being targeted for extermination after they helped set up a "fire sale," a three-pronged cyberattack designed to bring down the entire country by crippling its transportation, finances, and utilities. That plan is now being put into action by a mysterious team (Timothy Olyphant, Deadwood, and Maggie Q, Mission: Impossible 3) that seems to be operating under the government's noses.

Live Free or Die Hard uses some of the cat-and-mouse elements of Die Hard with a Vengeance along with some of the pick-'em-off-one-by-one elements of the now-classic original movie. And it's the most consistently enjoyable installment of the franchise since the original, with eye-popping stunts (directed by Len Wiseman of the Underworld franchise), good humor, and Willis's ability to toss off a quip while barely alive. There was some controversy over the film's PG-13 rating--there might be less blood than usual, and McClane's famous tag line is somewhat obscured--but there's still has plenty of action and a high body count. Yippee-ki-ay! --David Horiuchi
