Summary: GiSteq Phototrackr
Comment: The device works fine. It is fairly accurate in the test track I ran. The downside is the software for the Mac is lacking. It will not do RAW files and is not overly intuitive. The only "manual" is an online link to their website that I had to ask for. The unit only came with PC software.

Summary: know what to expect, then it will satisfy
Comment: It looks like an outdoor piece with the yellow case and mini carabiner.

It's not. There are no seals so it's not waterproof. The case is thin and I wouldn't want to hit it against a rock by accident.

However, it works. I had no trouble with USING the software and have purchased the PRO version. I've had it for about 4 months now and use it when I know I won't be in just 1 place (otherwise what's the point, right?). I had an issue installing the software on a laptop and support was responsive and fairly quick -- a day or 2 turnaround.

It's a small company and not a giant like MS or IBM so don't expect 24 hour at your door service and that kind of polished software.

I am also using rechargeable batteries and batt-life has been fine.

I carry it on my camera bag and it's missed maybe a couple points but it will ask you if you want to use the nearest waypoint which will work in most cases.

I've heard issues about the S*ny version from my friend. The chipset in this unit is supposedly as good or better than sirfIII.

so if you don't mind treating it as gently as your camera and knowing the company is not huge and expect the resulting level for the software then it probably beats some other choices. Is it the best? no. Does it work for the price? SO far yes.

Summary: Avoid this product at all costs
Comment: I bought this tracker when GiSTEQ announced that it was now Mac compatible. The truth is that it's NOT Mac compatible. The software cannot read tracks off the device. Go to www.GiSTEQ.com and read their forums to see all the Mac users and their problems, and while you're there have a read of all the other problems that Windows users are having. The software for this device is not ready for release into the wild. I sent my device back to the shop after 2 weeks of hell trying to get it to work in either OSX or Windows.

Summary: Works as advertised
Comment: After a complete lack of success with the ATP Photo Finder, I decided to try this one. Once I got it working, it works fine. I would give it more stars, but you have to do all the work figuring out the software and the timing between your camera and the photo tracker. The manuals are no help, and the software is minimally helpful.

On the plus side, I've gotten all that figured out and am actually enjoying the product. The accuracy seems pretty good, signal strength OK outside (wouldn't try it indoors). Synchronization with Google Maps is cool and I can even load photos from their software to my smugmug account (although slowly and one at a time). Given the current state of the market, this is probably about as best as you can do.

Summary: Great GPS device, Weak Signal
Comment: It works pretty good. I took it on a cruise to Jamaica and Grand Cayman and it tracked it pretty well. At times it can be very picky about where you are and getting a good GPS signal. I have trouble indoors with it. The software it came with did not work as well as I expected. I end up using the software it came with only to export the GPX data and use an alternate program for embeding the GPS data on pictures. I gave it 3 stars because of the weak signal and very poor software.
