Summary: Asking for flowers. Kathleen Edwards
Comment: Not really one of my favorite artists, but still enjoyable enough to be played now and then, the critics here in Sweden gave her a high rating so I ordered the CD because I got curious about her. Regards; Richard Naess

Summary: Wasn't "Asking For Flowers" but got a great disc instead.
Comment: Canadian artist Kathleen Edwards' latest offering "Asking For Flowers" is a very nice step up from her previous release "Back To Me" and is a true diamond in the rough. Even though some people have compared her to a younger version of Lucinda Williams, Kathleen Edwards is definitely a bona fide star in her own right and this release just cements what has been building over the last ten years. Each successive release has been more revealing than the last and the song quality and musicianship has continued to evolve, improve dramatically, and has been nothing short of amazing.

This disc easily has five or six tunes that will grab you by the collar and not let go. The lead-off song, "The Cheapest Key" has a great tempo and other songs such as "Buffalo," "Alicia Ross," "Run," "Oil Man's War," "Goodnight, California" and "Oh Canada" are solid, well-composed and finely crafted alt-country and rock numbers that are both a delight to hear and only get better and better with repeated playings. Yet, even with this strong line-up of songs, the true shining gems on this disc are the tracks "Scared At Night" and the title song "Asking For Flowers." In my modest opinion, they are genuine works of art!

When I first picked up this disc, I didn't quite know what to really make of it but with a little patience and an open mind, this release has quickly grown to be a personal favourite. I can only imagine that by the time I've finally had my fill of the CD - which may be never - there will be some serious skid marks to show for it. It's just that damned good!

Do yourselves a huge, huge favour and pick up a copy a.s.a.p. For fans of alt-country, pop and rock, this disc will not disappoint. Move over Lucinda, Kathleen's going to keep you company for a long, long time to come. This is, BY FAR, the best alt-country/rock release of 2008!

Summary: Another great effort from Kathleen Edwards!
Comment: I now have 3 wonderful albums from Kathleen Edwards! She's succeeded at that great balancing act of refining her writing, performance, and production values without becoming too "slick" or resorting to self-imitation. She maintains the raw energy and originality which made her earlier efforts so compelling. Her country influences are a bit more obvious here than in her earlier two albums, but her music still defies categories.

I loved "Failer" and "Back to Me", and am in love with "Asking for Flowers". They stand up on their own, play well together, and as individual tracks make great additions to a shuffle or mix program. But mostly I Pick "Kathleen Edwards" on my mp3 player's menu, then hit "play" and leave it alone for a few hours.

Summary: ASKING FOR FLOWERS by Kathleen Edwards
Comment: ASKING FOR FLOWERS by Kathleen Edwards is an excellent CD. Is it country? I don't know. I usually don't like country music. But I love this CD! Thank you Kathleen; I could listen to this CD over and over (and I do!)

Editorial Reviews:

After a three-year hiatus to catch up on life in her native Ontario, Kathleen Edwards has done nothing to separate herself from the small pool of North America's fast-rising songwriters, in which she is a deeply immersed member. Her third album continues her clear-minded, open-hearted lyricism, though with a ripeness that comes from years on the road and years more to reflect. Edwards remains in a tug-of-war with matters of the heart, and she's not afraid slyly to nudge the opposite side. "I'm a Ford Tempo (and) you're my Maserati," she sings in "I Make the Dough, You Get the Glory." It's a get-lost love song similar in tone to "The Cheapest Key," which finds the storyteller alphabetizing her romantic tribulations. Even the gorgeous melody of the title song is offset by the concession that a simple bouquet is not too much to ask in return. As the record's co-producer, Edwards has assembled a cracker-jack studio band (led by Heartbreakers' keyboardist Benmont Tench and pedal steel virtuoso Greg Leisz), and she turns it loose on "Oh Canada," a nod to her home nation, and "Oil Man's War," which speculates that a permanent trip to that country may be a viable alternative to life south of the border. --Scott Holter
