Customer Rating: Summary: Shirley Bassey Comment: Good product description. Opportunity to listen to various tracks, which I found very benefical. Excellent dispatch time, competitive price and product was packaged well. Would highly recommend Amazon for a professional service and satisfaction guaranteed. The album is Shirley had her best.
Customer Rating: Summary: There are divas, and then, there are DIVAS! Comment: For the most part, we Yanks know Bassey for her contributions to the Bond films, with her rendition of the "Goldfinger" theme, without a doubt, being one of the best performances in all of pop music history. We are not as fortunate as the British - and the rest of the world - to be as familiar with the legendary singer's total discography.
However, it appears that "Get the Party Started" should change all that as it is truly an album for the masses and those that truly appreciate a magnificent vocalist.
Dame Bassey, looking much younger than her 71 years, possesses a vocal instrument that is unparalleled, sounding just as full and vibrant as she did forty-odd years ago. The album of covers allows the singer to delve into a variety of sounds with some songs obviously placing a sly tongue-in-cheek nod to her Bond songs in the arrangement department. Her selections include songs made famous by the likes of Pink (the title cut), Tom Jones ("I Who Have Nothing"), Grace Jones ("Slave to the Rhythm"), Lionel Richie ("Hello"), Donny Hathaway/Robert Flack ("Where is the Love") and Gloria Gaynor ("I Will Survive"). However, like a true diva, Bassey puts her signature vocal power on each one, making them new and fresh as only she could.
The disc could have easily dismissed as a novelty or another in that long line of albums of covers by artists that have been released with excellent to moderate success (Think: Rod Stewart, Michael McDonald, etc.) But, Bassey, backed by a brilliant band and arrangements, has created something that stands above the norm.
The party has started and looks like it'll go on for some time.
ADDENDUM: The producers of the next Bond film should seriously consider Dame Bassey to return to her roots.
Now, that would be special!!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Dame Bassey Still "Has it!" Comment: I have been a long-time fan of Dame Bassey. This album is terrific as she is still in full voice!!
Customer Rating: Summary: The Dame Still Sounds Great Comment: Dame Shirley Bassey still sounds great. I would have preferred to have other songs substituted for some included on the CD. However, just hearing Shirley Bassey is a treat.
