Customer Rating: Summary: Amazon Shines Comment: I received the order promptly. Unfortunatly I could not upgrade from home premium to business. I had to return it and they provided a bar code mailing label to use. I'm sorry I haD to return it, but they made the transaction as easy as possible for me to return it. Thank you Amazon. Customer Rating: Summary: Cost me thousands in lost time Comment: We have tried to make Vista work for a year on a $2,000 laptop. We spent days getting our Vista compliant design software to work. Everytime we had to load new software we lost too much time. Our new laptop also ran slower than the old one with XP. The last straw was when a Microsft program would not work and the fix on Microsoft's website was a rewrite to the registry. Finally we reformatted the hard drive and installed XP. Everything works better and faster.
Customer Rating: Summary: Cost me $700 Comment: Microsoft Vista Business came bundled with a Lenovo laptop. Various glitches prompted numerous calls to my Microsoft Certified IT expert. Most recently, the system would just lose contact with the Internet for unknown reasons, then just as mysteriously regain contact several days later. Sometimes a "route print" at the administrator command prompt would show two "0.0.0.0" route entries, and deletion of these would sometimes (but not always) remedy the problem. Anyway, my IT expert finally just took Vista off and installed XP. I'm guessing my final outlay on this headache will total $700, not to mention my time.
Absolutely avoid the Vista operating system. I loaded Linux Ubuntu on a spare machine while the laptop was in the shop, and got instant browser, email, and Microsoft compatible word processing and spreadsheet. No flash, just functionality.
Customer Rating: Summary: Wait for SP2 or 3 or 4, or Upgrade Now, that is the Question Comment: In the Mac world updates to the operating system sometimes seem to come fast and furious, but unless it's a major upgrade, like from Tiger to Leopard (10.4 to 10.5) they are always free. In the windows world you pay for them. For example XP to Vista is similar to the Tiger - Leopard example and you expect to pay. Now tell me the difference between upgrading from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3 in the Mac world, a free upgrade and Vista to Vista with SP1. Is not the whole raison d'etre of SP1 to fix the mistakes of Vista, as are those free upgrades in the Mac world.
What a great cash cow Microsoft has going for it. Deliver a flawed operating system, charge a lot of money for it, then charge a gang of money to fix some, but not all of the flaws. That said, the SP1 upgrade does seem a bit faster and they say it's more secure and I guess I'll believe them.
Would I upgrade to SP1 from Vista if I were you. It depends. I'm not a power user, so I didn't see all that much difference, so if you're like me and everything is ticking along fine, then I suppose I'd leave well enough alone. But if you're someone who is concerned about all those hundreds of little problems they say plague Vista, then you might want to upgrade. Do I sleep better knowing those problems aren't lurking in my computer waiting to strike when I least expect it. Not really, because if I was that kind of person, then I'd probably lie awake nights, hoping, waiting, praying for SP2. Come on Microsoft, these upgrades should be free.
I know, I know, I shouldn't be complaining, because I got a free review copy of SP1 and because I haven't really had a bad Vista experience, so I guess I'll shut up now and just say, in my opinion if you're still running XP, then I'd upgrade, but if you're running Vista, I think I'd wait till SP2, or 3 or 4.
Still, upset as I am about Microsoft's business practice of charging for these upgrades, mine was flawless, everything still works (I did a clean install, after backing up) and the performance does seem better, so five stars from me for the upgrade.
Customer Rating: Summary: M$ I want my money back or a different OS! Comment: I cant really describe how disgusted I am with this OS I have involuntary reboots in the middle of working on tasks and other difficult to describe problems. Its slow as molasses and behaves like it is infected with a Virus.
An upgrade is an improvment, this is far from it!
