Summary: quirky and fun
Comment: I bought Meiko's album when it first came out and i have to say, I am in love with all the songs on it! Her piano melodies are playful and crisp and enhances her sweet, folksy voice. "Boys With Girlfriends" is my favorite because the song sounds simple and happy when you first listen to it, yet the lyrics are very tongue-in-cheek and shoots straight to the point.

Summary: Young Woman Offers Melodic Musings
Comment: Most music lovers crave a comprehensive selection of albums that suit their tastes. While the sound is her own, Meiko begs comparison to similar artists like Dido, Beth Orton, Rilo Kiley, or Sixpence None The Richer. This album contributes beautifully to that portfolio featuring women clamoring casually about emotions, relationships, and the daily routine. If you're young and thoughtful or remain fond of youthful considerations, this album will certainly appeal.

Summary: Love it
Comment: I think the remake of Meiko's album is even better than the first. I love the new song, "Boys with Girlfriends", but my favorite is still "Hawaii".

Summary: It's been said and done before.
Comment: Meiko has put together a group of songs that fall within the folk category with a hint of blues. The music and her voice sound fair. But, that's about all I can say for this recording. It's fair. That, and it's sounds like everything else, which makes it boring.

Everyone has different musical tastes, so I won't offer any comment on her style. My biggest gripe with this album is the lyrics. Every single track has the same old monotonous, sappy ooze about "you" and how "you" make me feel good and "honey, I need you" and "baby, when I'm in your arms", and......ahhhhh!!!!! Those may not have been the exact lyrics, but that's the basic idea that you are left with after a listen or two. If one more singer makes a song with the lyrics "it's gonna be alright", I think I just might have to start a formal outdoor protest at my local music store.

Where are the true songwriters? Do they exist any longer? These sorts of lyrics are annoying to me because it feels like the artists are either too lazy to create, or they just don't think the average listener can tolerate anything that might be even slightly more demanding of his or her attention. Colbie Caillat is another example of this kind of writing. I want to cringe every time I hear the song "Bubbly" playing in a retailer. But, I guess that's where it belongs, a place where most people are not even paying attention to lyrics.

If you are looking for real female vocalists/songwriters, check out Vienna Teng, Jesca Hoop, Priscilla Ahn, or even Regina Spektor. They are creative, thoughtful musicians who have enough respect for themselves to produce songs of substance. Their names will last longer for it.

Editorial Reviews:

2008 self titled album by Meiko with 11 tracks. Meiko started at the famed Hotel Caf‚ in Hollywood, where she was a waitress and performer before local and national buzz allowed her to put aside her drink tray for good. 'I retired from the waitressing field earlier this year,' she muses. 'Getting up in the morning and writing songs is my new profession.' Listen to her songs in a single setting and it's clear that she's very good at her job. A songwriter with a keen eye and vivid narrative gift, Meiko collects jagged moments and devastating conversational flashes and turns them into deceptively simple tunes with hushed, gentle tones and stunning detailed imagery.
