Summary: Very disappointing
Comment: The chemistry between the teenage actors portraying Jake and Kyle at the beginning of the film was very promising, and the film began with great possibilities. That said, the rest of the film was a complete failure. For one thing the director and cinematographer could have done better with the audio. The writing was also very poor. It seemed as if when a sentimental conversation was going on music was added suddenly as an afterthought. The film was too short and spent too much time with pointless interchanges between the adult Jake and his straight friend from the city and another one with a poor lady and Jake at his hometown. The scene in which Kyle's cousin uncovers Kyle and Jake in bed was the final disappointment that made the movie a bomb. Precious little time was spent developing the main relationship, and Jake's life in the city as a filmmaker was not believable: why not shoot a scene in a movie studio? I looked forward to this film with high hopes, but I was left wondering why I spent the money to buy the DVD.

Summary: Touching and sentimental!
Comment: I really enjoyed this film - I thought it was very moving, and quite lovely - made even more so by the actors being ordinary-looking guys, who find each other, and, at first, are just as awkward as they were as adolescents. But love conquers all - and it does in the end. I would highly recommend it for viewing by all gay men. I do not mean to exclude others, just that gay men would more readily relate to it.

Summary: Slightly overdone tale of unrequitted love revisited
Comment: Two teenagers, Jake and Kyle, camping out under the rural "Arizona Sky" (2008), realize what they feel for each other is much more than "best buddies." But Jake's father is forcing him to move away the next day, and Kyle is afraid of others finding out about their relationship, so they never get the chance to express their love physically.

Fast forward fifteen years, and Jake is a successful filmmaker in Hollywood, a job that has more than its share of 24/7 pressure. The job's demanding nature actually made it easier for him to excuse the fact that he had no social life, and is, indeed, still aching over the unrequitted love for Kyle. At the urging of his straight best friend and roommate, they take a week off and go back to visit Jake's home town, and he looks up Kyle, who still lives in that town. Does Kyle still feel the same way, and is there any chance they can pick up where they left off so many years ago?

Director Jeff London is known for these overdone syrup-sweet gay romances, and this is better than most, including some great casting. The young actors who play the leads as teens have a real chemistry, and actually resemble Eric Dean (Jake) and Jayme McCabe (Kyle) who play them as adults. The supporting cast is also excellent, but all suffer a bit from the heavy-handed direction. The sound is a bit strange, as the microphones seem to be switched on to capture a line, then turned off immediately, so background noise comes and goes with it. DVD has director/actor commentary and chapter stops only. Overall, it is a pleasant film, and I'd give it four stars out of five.

First Love

Amos Lassen

Kyle and Jake were special friends when they were teenagers and even though they wanted to show each other how they really felt for each other, living in a small town did not allow them that option. Finally Jake moved away and Kyle stayed behind but never forgot his best friend or his first love. Now, twenty one years later, each man realizes that his life did not go the way he wanted or planned. Jake moved to the big city but finds himself unhappy in big business. Kyle had planned to go to college but ended up staying home and taking care of his mother, minding the horses and working in a small-time diner. When Jake comes back on a vacation, the two find that their feelings for each other have not changed. It was probably a panic attack that caused Jake to return and when the two men reconnect the spark of their love is reignited. Kyle, however, is in the closet but upon seeing Jake, his feelings come forward. Kyle and Jake spend time reacquainting themselves with each other and with the help of family; they discover how important happiness is.
There is a great deal of sweetness here and I am glad to say that director Jeff London has really come far after his last film. I love movies like this that have that touch of romance--they make one feel good all over.

Editorial Reviews:

When they were teens, Kyle and Jake had special feelings for each other, but small-town life was too inhibiting for them to express their emotions. One boy moved away, while the other stayed behind without his best friend. Twenty-one years later, neither man's life has turned out the way he planned. Jake hoped to make it big in the city, but finds business unfulfilling. Kyle hoped to go to college, but stayed home to care for his ailing mom, tend the horses and work the diner. One day, Jake takes a vacation back to the desert to spend a few days with his long-lost buddy. To both men's surprise, old emotions are rekindled, but this time, with the help of family, they are about to find out how they can be happy once again---under the Arizona Sky.
