Are they allowed to preach in the church like they do on the net?Our beloved Phred Phelps. Around here we like to say Phu*k Phred. He is a local staple here in Topeka Ks. Every day, 365 days a year we drive by he and his clan (which includes very young children) on the street corners with their LOVELY signs.
Here's the local urban legend - Phred was a local lawer for years. During a case, he called the Judge a phaggot. The judge disbarred him and ever since, he has been obsessed with "phags".
He's probably most famous for protesting the Matthew Shepard funeral in Wyoming quite some time ago. He has also protested Bill Clinton's mother's funeral as well as ANYWHERE he can get attention.
I've got some friends that used to put on clown suits and make signs that said, "GOD HATES CLOWNS", then they'd go jump around like idiot amidst Phred's gay protests. Phred never got the point though as since 9/11, now God hates America. It only used to be PHAGS now they've got upside down flags. They've got signs that read things like AIDS = God's prescription for PHAGS. PHAG = BURN in HELL So nice for the local parents to have to explain these things to their children at too young of an age but hey, that's free speech I guess.
To answer your question, they have their own church (Westboro Baptist I think)eerily surrounded by a six foot privacy fence as well as the rest of the family's homes. It's like a compound.
They're probably having problems with their websites at the moment because we had an ice storm and a lot of areas are without power.
There has been many movements to get them off our streets with ordinances and stuff but they're full of lawyers in their family and they sue anyone that even thinks about challenging them. They keep a video camera on their "protests" at all times, if you yell at them or anything, they get your license # and send you crap in the mail and I've heard of them protesting in front of people's homes, we just ignore them.
It's really sad, think of the positive they could do in this world if they dedicated the same amount of energy to something positive.
