Why
A simple, direct answer to the question, "Why does communism kill?" is-because the founder of Communism, Karl Marx, told them it was necessary to kill a large segment of the population in order to attain the basic objective of Communism.
Marx states in the Manifesto of the Communist Party:

You must, therefore, confess that by "individual" you mean no other person than the bourgeois, than the middle-class owner of property. This person must indeed, be swept out of the way, and made impossible. (Published by Progress Publishers, Moscow, 1973 edition, page 66)

Apologists for Marxism contend that Marx did not intend that this statement should be taken literally. They affirm that he was referring to the gradual elimination of property owners by the transformation of the economic system which Communism would bring to pass. They cannot deny, however, that many followers of Karl Marx, including Stalin, Mao Tse-tung, and Pol Pot have taken this affirmation literally and have proceeded to kill the "middle-class owners of property" once they have acquired power.

"bourgeois" means middle-class in French, though they are more then just property owners. More importantly, they are the ones with the means of production. These are the people who provide the machines for companies to produce their goods. They own the skyscrapers that rent out spaces to other companies. Their companies make Bill Gates worth seem petty. The difference with these guys is that they constantly put their money into more means of production to create more money. This idea is what drove President Bush's theory to reduce tax for the rich to save the economy, if they have more money they will need more people to create products. It goes much deeper than this, but I think you get the gist. I just thought the term "middle-class" was a little bit of an understatement. In the US they are considered "upper class".

As for why it kills, it isn't properly introduced. Communism is a process of social evolution that goes something like this monarchy -> democracy -> socialism -> communism. The idea of socialism is that the product is primarily produced privately and then distributed through the government. The process moves us slowly towards economical equality. Oddly enough, the Democrats move us into that direction every time they create a bigger government. Though currently that applies to Republicans as well.

Communism comes in once everyone is equal and works in a way where government is barely noticable. Everyone theorectically works their hardest to produce items, then everyone takes whatever they want. Nothing costs anything and no one is greater then anyone else. Marx called it a "Utopia" which pretty much means "nowhere". I'm not too sure it's possible, though it is on the very far end of the evolution process, which would make it hard for anyone to comprehend as possible.
