So whats been happening in your local city today? :D

A 600-metre serpent, ten giant hillbillies, 2005 balloons and 3.5 tonnes of fireworks, as well as 180 performers have all helped launch Cork's year as European Capital of Culture.

More than 80,000 people flocked to the city centre for a massive carnival after President Mary McAleese formally opened the year at a civic ceremony at City Hall.

The city centre has been closed off to traffic as some 180 performers from all over the world brought the streets to life at ten individual stages from Patrick Street to Grand Parade.

My city can't match Cork on the serpent,
or the fireworks.

I see a lot more than ten giant hillbillies every
day, though- we can't seem to keep them from
wandering down from the mountains.

And if you're talking about regular balloons,
I expect we could match your 2005. If they
are those big hot air deals, I dunno.

Some other posters here might unfairly claim
that balloons or no, my city could match any
other for its production of hot air.

My ancestors on my father's side are supposedly from Cork...unfortunately the geneaology is rather sketchy, as they were apparently stowaways on a ship bound for the US during the potato famine.:(

Anyway, I have been told (by an Irishman) that my last name is so prevalent in the Cork telephone book that my heritage there is unquestionable statistically and impossible to trace practically.
