View Full Version : Since many believe God is a male, does he have a penis?

Blush....

I understand many refer to God with he, and him....and her.

Does God need a gender?

If god does not get to use sex or reproductive organs, why does anyone refer to god as having a gender?

You've noticed that almost all religions are male oriented?

Women have often been viewed by men as inferior. They merely transferred this template to religion, most of which was written...by men.

Xexon, I think it's a bit more accurate to say most of the so-called "modern" religions are male oriented. In pagan religions generally, as I understand it, there is much greater equality of the sexes, and some are even women oriented.

As well as Greek, Roman and Egyptian.

But to answer the thread if there is a god.... he apparently doesn't need a penis. he can just put a baby in whatever chick that he wants to.... If you believe in that sort of thing.

Until God (if there is a god) drops his pants in front of the whole world to see, then call him 'Shim'? It sounds good and has a nice sound to it, don't you think?

God said "we will make man in our image"
but man was lonely
so God split man into two (the hebrew that's typically translated "rib" actually comes alot closer to "side"); and told the two halves to live together (God is allowed to make mistakes, he didn't realize that the half with the penis would never be able to freaking understand the half without): and that's why a man and a woman can "join and become one"

That occured to me after the fact, but then I thought about Judaism which goes back 5000 years. Perhaps they set this "male" trend?

Pretty much the same reason we ascribe gender to inanimate objects. Like refering to a boat or a car as a "she". Makes it more relatable.

beg your pardon

I bet his penis is HUGE. Like the size of Florida with twice the girth.

In that logic then Adam should have no sex at all. Because Adam and Eve would not have their respetive 'parts' until they split. It follows that God was unisexual as well.

crux:

patriarchy in society and the former domination of "god" by the catholic church

Through revelation God has revealed he is the Father and is pure spirit (no body). God the Son, Jesus Christ, became man. Jesus Christ has a body, and was born male. The Holy Spirit has no body and is spirit. This is basic Christian belief in the Trinity.

It sounds like everyone in this forum has either been to the toilet with God or God (if God exists) has told them personally what sex he/she is. Let's assume God (if God exists) doesn't need the reproductive parts that man has. If so, he wouldn't have the chance to use them much. Right? Right!

What if god was a hermaphrodite? ......She-male?

I do not think God has a gender, but if so, then would not Christian Doctrine be suggesting berdaching qualities?

I don't know about God (if God exists) having 'berdaching' qualities, but according to Moses (if you believe the biblical account), he might have had some pretty good 'burning' qualities, especially when it came to bushes and writing on stone tablets!

Is Moses really in the Bible, or just implied? I thought Moses's name did not literally appear in the Bible..... I could be wrong..... I gave my bible away, and I don't want to look up the virtual Bible right now...Bah!

Agreed. And to add to that, much less gender or any of the trivial human notions of identity.

dittohead not!

Actually, Genesis doesn't tell the whole story:

Man was lonely, and God offered to make a woman to keep him company. Adam said, "That's a great idea. Can You make one that I can understand?"
"Yes, of course. I can do anything, even that, but it will cost you an arm and a leg."
"Oh. Well, what can I get for just a rib?"

The rest is history. Man has never understood woman, they are just too different, but, as a famous Frenchman once said, "Vive la differance!"

Yea, but it wasn't that 'Apple' in the tree that caused all of the trouble, it was that 'Pair' on the ground.

Jesus Christ obviously had a penis, you can see it in nativity pictures and statues all over the christian world.
I think that the matter of discussion was his father.

as God would be immaterial; it would be impossible for him to have genetalia.

JoeR

Also it would be impossible to assign a gender to God. Methinks referring to God as Him comes about because of the patriarchal culture, except of course unless you refer to Jesus, who was biologically a male.

So why can't we call 'him', 'it'?

cpwill

 "it" is too impersonal, Jesus was a man, and God has chosen to reveal himself to us as a father figure. you can call God "it" if you really want to, i suppose, but even that doesn't really cover it.
