NYC to get 18 inches of snow. Blizzard warning, 50 mph winds.

And I was complaining today about how hot it was having gotten up to about 80 degrees where I live.

"... Blizzard Warning remains in effect from noon Saturday to noon EST Sunday...

Snow will move in late Saturday morning. It will become very heavy late Saturday afternoon and evening. The snow will taper off Sunday morning. Final snow accumulations will be 12 to 18 inches by Sunday morning. In addition to the snow... northeast winds will increase Saturday afternoon... and will be quite gusty Saturday night and Sunday morning. Winds may gust up to 50 mph late Saturday night and early Sunday morning... allowing for visibilities to drop to near zero at times. These winds will result in significant blowing and drifting of snow as well as power outages. Wind chill values will be below zero at times.

This is a life-threatening winter weather situation! Preparations to protect life and property need to be completed by noon Saturday!

A Blizzard Warning is issued when sustained wind speeds or frequent gusts of over 35 mph are expected with considerable falling and or blowing and drifting snow. Visibilities will become poor... with whiteout conditions at times. Those venturing outdoors may become lost or disoriented... so persons in the warning area are advised to stay indoors."

Ack... thanks for reminding me. I need to open the shades and see if I can see through the window yet.

And this has been bothering me. This is just another blizzard. 18 inches is a good storm, but it's hardly unheard of. The north-east gets hit by one or more of those every year. Now if we were talking about 4 feet again, THAT would worry me. 18 inches wouldn't even get me out of classes (if it were a weekday).

beg your pardon

Im hoping it snows like crazy for the games. Nothing better than a sloppy, snowy football game.

I don't really like the sloppy games but I remember fondly the "ice bowl" of 1967. That was one for the record books at -40 wind chill degrees. I loved it.

1967 NFL Championship
The Ice Bowl
Sun, Dec 31, 1967
at Lambeau Field
Green Bay Packers 21 · Dallas Cowboys 17

By Scott Crevier

The day was New Years Eve, Sunday, December 31, 1967; the coldest New Year's Eve in Green Bay's recorded history. The stadium was the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field with 50,861 fans on their feet. The temperature was 13 degrees below zero. The wind chill, 40 below. The game was to determine the NFL champion and who would advance to what would later be called Super Bowl II. The match-up, Tom Landry and his Dallas Cowboys versus Vince Lombardi and his two-time defending champion Green Bay Packers.

The Packers jumped to an early 14-0 lead via two touchdown passes from Bart Starr to Boyd Dowler. But Dallas came back in the 2nd quarter to force two fumbles leading to a touchdown and a field goal. The halftime score was 14-10. No one reached the end zone in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, halfback Dan Reeves threw a 50-yard strike to Lance Rentzel to give Dallas a 17-14 lead.

The Packers took over on their own 32 yard line with 4:50 left on the clock. They engineered a 68-yard drive in 12 plays, driving all the way down to the two-foot line. With 16 seconds left and no timeouts remaining, the Packers could have easily kicked a field goal to tie it, forcing the fans to endure a bitter cold overtime. Instead, on 3rd and 24 inches, Jerry Kramer threw the block of the century, allowing enough room for Bart Starr to sneak into the south end zone for the winning touchdown. Chandler kicked the extra point and the Packers won the Ice Bowl, 21-17.

It looks like the fun will really start late tonight into Sunday. We had an Alberta Clipper drop down this afternoon leaving about 6” along with blowing and drifting snow. The winds associated with this storm are greater than one would normally see from this type of storm and I believe Weather forecasters believe it will strengthen over the Atlantic so Philly and Boston should get socked. Add this to current temperatures in the low single digits and this could be the frostbite bowl.

I hope anyone brave or crazy enough to attempt to drive to the game takes their time and get there safely.

There have been some classic games played in the snow. By gametime in Philly the snow should be letting up, but they could get as much as 15 inches. The forecast calls for 18 degrees and 25 mph wind at kickoff. Even if the snow stops it's going to be freezing!

The problem with these huge snowfalls is that it takes so long to get rid of it. The sun bounces off the snow during the daytime and the temperatures drop rapidly in the evening. Then the melting leads to the ice and so forth. I put up with that for 57 years until I said I had enough. No more snow and I don't have to shovel heat. How sweet it is.
