Woman guilty of DUI after 3 glasses of Listerine
ADRIAN, Michigan (AP) -- A woman arrested after failing a sobriety test and telling police she drank three glasses of Listerine has pleaded guilty to drunken driving.
Carol Ries, 50, was pulled over after she rear-ended another vehicle at a red light on January 9. She passed one breathalyzer test, but failed another that used different equipment.

Learn something new everyday. Never knew Listerine had so much alcohol in it.

I lived in a really horrible little town in Saskatchewan when I was younger and this was rather common for a certain type of people. Most stores acctually had a policy of not selling listerine (or hairspray), alone.

Wouldn't drinking mouthwash kill you?

Still common, not just in little Saskatchewan towns, big cities have that problem to. Lysol and canned whipped cream are also problem items

Bums in Boston are known to buy or steal mouthwash to get drunk.

Not right away. It can make you plenty sick, however.
People will drink perfume, shaving cream, strain cans of sterno and drink the liquid - you name it. A few years back, some kids tampered with the refigeration unit at a local pizza place so they could huff the freon.
I teach a DUI education program, and I had a woman in class who got a DUI while drinking mouthwash. It was her form of denial - it wasn't booze, therefore she wasn't an alcoholic.
A guy in a multiple offender class (2 DUI's in 7 years) told us about huffing Glade Air Freshener. (Pot Pourri scent, in case you were wondering) That was a truly sickening story.
Be wary of Nyquil - it's 70 proof.

I spent a few months in a half-way house (long story) after I turned 18. It was a drug and alcohol house, not the one you go to when you get out of prison. Anyways, there were a few people who would relapse on mouthwash, Nyquil, or anything else they could find around their apartment that contained alcohol. It was actually pretty sad.

Yes indeed, Jray. There's a level of desperation there that is heartbreaking, especially when people start on cleaning products, and really toxic things like sterno. Anyone coming out of treatment should read labels very carefully.

How many nyquil's would you have to take? The whole box?

Dan - the liquid comes with a little plastic shot glass, and it's 70 proof.

At least she didn't say "a couple of beers" like 99% of the people pulled over on COPS.
I quiit letting my 4th. graders have permanent markers, because they would sit and sniff them. They heard somewhere that the smell could make them "high." Whether that's true or not, I'm not sure. These are 8 and 9 year old kids. Think we have a drug problem in this country?

Most markers now are non-toxic, so they don't really get people high anymore. The last ones I remember that would actually get you high are those ones they sold about 20 years ago that were about 4 inches tall and had little stripes going around the cannister.

I used to like the markers that smelt like fruits and such. But, I would always hold them too close and end up leaving a mark. :)

That's the standard answer in real life!! I've been teaching DUI classes since 1998, and that's the line.
Very few people tell the truth - though some have, and those stories are usually pretty funny. In one instance, the cop told the guy to get out of his truck, and the guy said no. The cop said - get out of the truck - more insistantly. The guy said NO. The cop (now getting mad) said, "I'm not kidding, get out of the truck, NOW," and the guy said, "I can't - I'm too drunk, and I'll fall down."

Yes, indeedy, Jetboogieman. Listerine's alcohol content is 26.9, double the alcohol content of an average bottle of wine. Wine is about 12%.

It's good to hear that the kids can't really get high off of permanent markers any more, but just to know that they think they can and will sit and sniff them makes me wonder about our society and its values.
As for listerine, wouldn't it make you really sick if you drank enough to get drunk? Yuck!

Listerine isn't meant to be swallowed, there are actually warning labels against it on the bottle. Normally it's only used out of desperation. It's a really poor way to get drunk.

It very likely would. I know a guy who drank some mouthwash, and hiccupped for a solid week - I know that sounds funny, but imagine not being able to stop hiccupping for 7 days. He went to rehab.
