I honestly thought I'd never see the day when this was revealed, but as Portugal buries Sister Lucia, the last surviving witness of Fatima (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4267515.stm), the infamous third secret has been revealed.

For anyone who didn't know, one of the first tasks of any incoming Popes in the 20th century, was to read the third secret. It's never previously been made public knowledge and much speculation has surrounded it.

The prophecy is believed to have been given to three Portuguese children during a series of apparitions by the Virgin Mary in 1917.

At the release of the text Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger reiterated the Vatican line that the secret referred to events which have already happened.

After the two parts which I have already explained, at the left of Our Lady and a little above, we saw an angel with a flaming sword in his left hand. Flashing, it gave out flames that looked as though they would set the world on fire.

But they died out in contact with the splendour that Our Lady radiated towards him from her right hand.

Pointing to the earth with his right hand, the angel cried out in a loud voice: "Penance, penance, penance!"

For some reason; people claiming that they have seen an apparition of the Virgin Mary are very common in Catholic circles. They are known as Marian Events/Apparitions. (http://www.rotten.com/library/religion/marian-apparitions/) I can't claim to know how the Vatican decides which ones to approve to their followers (I believe there are 9 approved events), but I imagine their objectivity is coloured by their desire to believe that the claims are true... much like Elvis fanatics want to believe he is still alive.

If anyone is interested, the novel 'Our Lady of the Forest' (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0375412115/qid=1109296654/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1/102-5884470-4361761) by David Guterson is quite an insightful examination of the phenomenon.
