How do you get a Jew, a Christian, and a Muslim together in Israel for a moment of mutual understanding and cooperation?

Target a gay pride parade! Yay!

JERUSALEM - (KRT) - Alarmed by a large international gay gathering planned in Jerusalem this summer, Israel's chief rabbis joined top Christian clerics and Muslim representatives Wednesday to condemn the event as a provocation, warning that it could trigger unrest in the city holy to their faiths.

Representing communities that are sometimes bitterly divided by political and religious conflict, the Jewish, Christian and Muslim clergymen appeared at a joint news conference organized by the chief rabbinate, in a rare show of unity.

They issued a declaration warning that holding the gay event in Jerusalem would "desecrate its sanctity and character and cause a breakdown in public order," and they called on Israeli authorities to prevent it.

Jerusalem was chosen as the venue for WorldPride 2005, a 10-day festival organized by InterPride, The International Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Coordinators, which organizes gay events in various countries.

The main event of the Jerusalem gathering, scheduled to take place in August, will be a parade, and the program also includes a film festival and theater performances, art exhibitions, academic and interfaith conferences, and parties.

The first WorldPride event was held in Rome in 2000, drawing tens of thousands of participants from around the world despite opposition from the Vatican.

Organizers of this year's event said they chose Jerusalem to promote tolerance in the conservative, ethnically divided city that has been battered by violence in more than four years of Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

But the religious leaders said the gay gathering would offend believers of all faiths and aggravate tensions at a time when the political climate will already be charged by Israel's expected evacuation this summer of all settlements in the Gaza Strip.

I dunno about everyone else, but I'm gonna head over and open a rock shop... I'll call it 'A Stone's Throw Away' and sell perfectly balanced and shaped stoning rocks for the parade :) I should make a mint.

It is so nice to see people of different religious creeds get together and share a common hatred of a minority.... gotta love that religious acceptance of that we are all "gods" children.... YEA save for the homosexuals..... what a bunch of crap... and is a good portion of the reason why I don't like organized religion.

Nothing unites opposing forces more than a common enemy.

Perfect example. Religion sucks.

Is it religion itself that sucks, or is it the people who follow those religions that are the problem? Mabey it is when people have the mindset that their way is the only correct way that really sucks.........

Unfortunately, most religions have this as a basic tenet as a form of maintaining control. I suppose it should be amazing that three religions, each of which insists on its own superiority over any other, can somehow come together in opposition of anything... even if it happens to be an agreement between dogma.

For instance... if a gay individual at the parade were to wake up and want to not only denounce homosexuality, but be converted on the spot... which of the three would get the vict... I mean, which of the three would get the person?

True.

I think religion is just mind mush for the weak. Common sense tells people, even with the least amount of measurable intelligence, that's it all poppycock yet they fight their own instincts to defend their pride. They will never admit their own logical, inherent doubt. I think when people start preaching at me that they are really preaching to themselves, trying, yet again, to convince theirselves that fairy tales are true.

When I know something to be true in my own heart, I feel no need to convince others of it. Perhaps they just don't want to be alone in their fantasies therefore they feel obligated to convince others of their hogwash I dunno. I don't care. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck......

I wouldn't be so harsh Cap... religion has some very good uses and is geared toward survival... it is just corrupted by people who want power.

Belief isn't necessarily tied to pride... did you ever believe in Santa? :)

IMHO it's not the religion that's so bad, it's the fact that it's organized.

Anytime a system becomes that big, it ceases to be less about concern for people as it does the survival of the system itself.

-JC

Honestly, no. I believed in the old drunk guys at the mall in the red suit because I KNEW they were real. I PRETENDED like I believed to make my mom and dad feel good. But I always knew better for as long as I can remember. In fact, I was sent out to stand in the hall in the first grade for arguing with the other kids who did believe in Santa. In fact, Ms. Herrington, Kayla's mom, even came to school to register a complaint against me for telling her daughter there was surely no Santa. I think I leaned a valuable lesson back then.

Turned out I was right. There is no Santa. I'm sure that I am right in regard to religious poppycock just as well. Only when other people come to realize that, it won't matter. They'll be dead. But I will not get on my soapbox to try to convince these people. I don't want to go stand in the hall again. :o

I don't need a church to tell me not to steal, kill or do things that go against my nature. And I take a bit of offense when people try to lay claim to all that is good in the name of some religion. I assure you, if we had never invented Islam, Christianity, or whatever, society would NOT be going around killing and raping each other. Simple survival teaches us what is acceptable and what is not.

It's nice to pretend I suppose. But some of us were born cursed with an eye for reality. I'm sure the believers have more fun. La la la la la la.....

At any rate, its probably a good thing that these groups are at least attempting a dialogue on somthing.

What gives them or anyone else the right to have an opinion on gay relationships in the first place or anything else that does not directly concern their well being on this planet. Perhaps they feel threatened by homosexuality.......

No belief in Santa? The Toothfairy? Zorro???? Sheesh... how sad :(

Seriously though :p I'm sure you'd admit you're in a minority. Belief is gained through education, and when someone is educated that a thing exists without any sort of counter-learning - no matter how insane or poppycockish it may be - they will accept it as fact and, as you learned, they will fight for it for no reason other than belief.

I'm curious though... did no one ever try and give you the Santa myth? Did someone counter-act that teaching if you did have one? My own parents told me the truth relatively young... but they did keep it alive for a few years.

Oh sure. My folks did the Santa thing with me. I got pictures of me and "Santa" when I was 4 or 5. Of course, that age is to young to believe in anything. But at 6 or 7 or so, I PRETENDED to believe, like I said, because I thought that was a required pre-requsite to getting toys and stuff. But I always knew it was BS.

But as far as I can remember I was a "round peg, round hole" kinda person. At the earliest age I knew it was impossible for a dude to go around the world on a flying sleigh pulled by reindeers and give EVERYBODY their toys. My brain has a built in "Physics" meter. I think I am lucky in that regard. I use that instinct every day in my professions. I know the limitations of reality and I think in terms of logic within the boundry of the dictates of reason.

At the risk of being redundant, if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck....my mind tells me it's a duck. How unfortunant I must be.

At the risk of my own redundancy... 99% of the time it may be a duck.. but it is the 1% that I deal in ;)

That is because it has been stripped from them through years of indoctrination and repitition. It no longer exists in many people.

Hatred could go wild then, couldn't it?

Such nonsense.

My parents gave up early with the Santa business. I asked too many questions. They eventually gave up on taking me to Sunday School for the same reason.

What would the world be like if mankind had never invented religion?

On religious jokes.. An Inuit hunter asked the local missionary: "If I did not know about God and sin, would I go to hell?" "No," said the priest, "not if you did not know." "Then why," asked the Inuit earnestly, "did you tell me?"
