Very tragic ending.

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) - Three boys whose bodies were found in the trunk of a car following a massive, two-day search died from accidental suffocation, not foul play, authorities said Saturday.

The bodies were discovered Friday when David Agosto lifted the trunk of a banged-up maroon Toyota Camry in the yard where the boys were last seen. There, he found the bodies of his 6-year-old son Daniel Agosto; 5-year-old Jesstin Pagan and 11-year-old Anibal Cruz.

Officials said no foul play was suspected, but it was not clear why searchers - who combed the yard next to Cruz family home - did not find the boys sooner.

Tragic ... truly tragic.

I just can't imagine what this family is going through.

There are several questions to be answered regarding this incident.

I have read that this particular car had been previously searched; but not the trunk? HUH? My Skylark has a latch inside the car, near the driver door, that opens the trunk (boot). Most newer cars do not require a key to access the trunk.

I also find it hard to believe that the trunk of any car is sealed so airtight as to not provide enough air to breathe. If that's the case, the parents have a case similar to the lawsuits that forced refridgerator manufacturers to eliminate mechanical latches on fridge doors in the late '50's and go with magnets.

I cannot imagine the heartwrenching pain the familys of the little boys are going through right now. Prayers for them.

It depends on how old the car is. I believe all cars are now made with internal latches in the trunk (I know at least some are.) That would pretty much remove the use of a lawsuit.

As for why they didn't check the trunk sooner... I have no explanation. It's the first place I would've looked since it was in the area they were last seen. Though if it was air-tight enough to suffocate them, it still probably would have been too late.

My mother's 2003 Sable & my stepfather's 2001 Concorde both have trunk releases inside the trunk.
