Microsoft has been looking to edge into the search business for some time now. They recently announced they would not be renewing a contract with Inktomi to provide search results to msn, and have been working on their own algorithmic search engine. Google is the clear leader in this category, and yahoo has been outmaneuvering Microsoft, leaving MS with few options.
The takeover approach gained "little traction," but I thought it was interesting that they'd even try.
