Costas, hired by CNN as an occasional fill-in on "Larry King Live," refused to anchor Thursday's show because it was primarily about the Alabama teenager who went missing in Aruba. Chris Pixley filled in at the last minute.

"I didn't think the subject matter of Thursday's show was the kind of broadcast I should be doing," Costas said in a statement. "I suggested some alternatives but the producers preferred the topics they had chosen. I was fine with that, and respectfully declined to participate."

Costas' manager declined to elaborate on what Costas didn't like about the topic.

I'll bet I can guess what he didn't like about the topic. Thank God SOMEONE in the infotainment industry is still sane... relatively speaking.

Why would they fire him, even if they could? He was a fill-in :p

-JCif it was anyone of us common folk, i doubt if our boss would have been so considerate of our feelings...he should be relieved of any further duties. CNN should find another fill in.

Hm... you're just confusing the hell out of me today Green. The guy isn't obligated to fill in. They asked, he declined. That's like saying Billy Crystal should never again be asked to host the Oscars because he decided not to one year.

-JC the way i read the article, cnn HIRED HIM to fill in for 20 shows...CNN is his employer in this respect, and they should fire him

The way I read the article, the decision not to host the show was mutual. Personally I find it considerate of CNN not to force an individual to run a program when he does not feel comfortable with the material being presented.

I would also make a pretty educated guess that the man's contract has provisions which include the ability to decline hosting on such grounds.

But oh well :p I don't really care if the fire him or not. The story doesn't need more coverage and I applaud anyone who would refuse to feed the beast.

I don't care about the issue of should he be fired for not filling in or filled in for not being fired. I didn't follow the aruba thing. I am interested in your guess about what he didn't like about the topic though.

Is this simply because of business ethics? A person doesn't have a right to build their own reputation?

I'm geussing he either didn't think it should be covered anymore, or didn't want to tackle something like that since he primarily covers sports (doesn't he?)

Well, if his line of thinking is anything near my own, he didn't take the show because he doesn't believe there is any actual news to cover. Since about day 14 this story has been an exploitation of the daughter and the mother.

The entire "missing white woman" field is somewhat irritating to begin with. I just saw another on CNN... 20 yrs old, cute, white - missing.
