At a UPS terminal today there was an SUV parked outside with the motor running while the owner mailed a parcel. Was this to keep the AC going? Why? Temps were only in the low 70's today.

Maybe it had a balky starter? I've had to do that a couple times.

maybe it is more efficient to keep the engine running for short periods of time instead of stopping it and starting it up again. idk?!!

Maybe most Americans are far more concerned about what's convenient than what's right. The ironic thing is that SUV owner probably complains long and loud about how expensive gas is but, when push comes to shove, they would rather pay more in gas bills than go a little out of their way to conserve. It's just so inconvenient...

It's funny that it used to be a bad thing to be a consumer, but nowadays, it's an odd thing not to be one.

actually, restarting an engine uses way more fuel if it is less than 3 or 4 minutes. If more, then you should turn the engine off.

You got that right Kiz. My dad drives a Mercedes SUV and is complaining to high heaven about the gas prices. I just laugh.

I see it's against the law to keep your car running at railroad crossings in Germany. Is that true all over Europe?

Actually, according to extensive studies by UPS & FedEx, it is cheaper to shut down the engine when stopping for more than 30 seconds.

Interesting. Searching more, there is a lot of conflicting advice. Gotta link to that study? Curious to know if that is the same for my car as well as their giant trucks....

It is bad for the engine I know that much not sure about the gas thing though. Perhaps this is one for the Myth Busters.
