MONTGOMERY, Alabama - The death of an Alabama service station owner illustrates the point that a gasoline industry group makes over and over to its members: Losing money during a drive-off isn’t worth losing your life.
Husain “Tony” Caddi, 54, died Friday after being run over by a driver who police believe wasn’t going to pay for $52 worth of fuel. Police are searching for the driver of the gold or tan Jeep-style SUV.
With gasoline prices soaring, industry experts predict the number of drive-offs — and violence — will increase.

I think we will see a lot of pay first stations as Gas becomes more expensive. It is a shame that people resort to this kind of behavior.

I had no idea there were still places where you don't have to pay first.

I don't know about anybody else, but living in a big city I had forgotten there was anything but pay-first stations. There is no such thing as a "go ahead and pump your gas, worry about paying us later" station in Dallas...

Lots of places here are pump-first...and they have cameras to catch drive-offs.

One out of 1,100 is actually less than I would have expected. I drove off once without paying. I was busy, it was a hectic day, I filled the tank and left and it was probably an hour later when I suddenly realized I hadn't walked into the station. I rushed back and as I was pulling up the owner was laughing. He said, "You're not the only one who's done that."
We also had quite a few dine-and-dash incidents. A few restaurants actually remodeled to make their layout less conducive to people running out without paying.
Some people just figure someone else should foot the bill for them.

My mother in law uses the Mobil flash key. You wave this device over a sensor on the pump and it automatically charges your predetermined payment source (credit card, debit card). Well she waved the the key and started to pump filled up her car got in it and drove off. An hour later a cop knocked on her door and asked her if she just pumped gas at the gas station. For some reason, the key failed to activate the transaction so she basically pumped and drove off. She was so horrified that she made the cop feel bad. The cop told her to go back to the station and for her Gas and to call him back on his Cell so that he could verify and void the report. The Gas attendant said that he knew she did not mean to drive off and told her that this happens 3 - 4 time a day.
