Yeah, this one ain't gonna make some people very happy. Since I've already written up a block on this one, I'll just post two links...
First, my commentary on the study: for the love of God finish the whole bit. (http://www.raptureincorporated.com/#religionandsociety), you may be surprised at my conclusion.
And two: the study itself: Cross-National Correlations of Quantifiable Societal Health with Popular Religiosity and Secularism in the Prosperous Democracies (http://moses.creighton.edu/JRS/2005/2005-11.html)
Happy reading.

I would say that I'm sure there is some possible correlation between religion and dysfunction. In my personal life I would say it was true, yet at the same time that religious upbringing, gave me a moral foundation to make good decisions. I was raised very religiously. When I "grew up", I questioned that way of life, based on a consious comparison of the "secular" world to my "religious" world I had been raised in. All that "bad secular world" stuff I'd been fed didn't compute logically to what I was observing. If you get your world turned upside down, your bound to battle some dysfunctional tendancies for the simple fact of having to relearn to function in a "new reality". In my case it felt like I had been lied to by my parents, church and school.
That being said, many people are raised religiously and have a very healthy relationship with their family, friends and society. I do now but I had to "dysfunction" for a while until I figured it out. The difference is probably in the approach I suppose.
Beyond that, we could probably make the case for dyfuntionality being caused by a thousand different reasons with religion being just one. Hard to say for sure.

:) saw this already, made me laugh. i'll be the first to admit that lots of christians are hypocrites, but this is about as blatant a case of pre-determining your result as ever i've run across. hey, america is economically more viable than europe, and has better unemployment rates. i think we can safely assume that the more religious you are the more your economy will provide jobs, and the higher your growth rate will be....

I was in the middle of the introduction when I decided to read the rest later and get some relief at Whistle stopper. (I found it linked from another source.) I'll let you know when I get through the whole thing, won't be soon though since I must go watch Serenity later today.
