Some religious denominations and cults may use propaganda to control it's subjects but atleast for me and the way I follow Chrisitanity and the way my church teachs it is not through fear and propaganda.

Without a question, Jack Chick uses fear and propaganda to gain converts to Christianity with his "Chick Tracts". The other group who puts on the performance about hell, and all the nasty things and suffering that go on down there, also use fear and propaganda to gain converts. Moreover, even if a particular church even completely ignores any parts of the Bible designed to induce fear, I would hold that Christianity inherently uses fear to a degree, simply because of these passages in the Bible which is the holy text for the religion.

Religion is propaganda.

When it was invented, there was no mass media, and literacy was a privilege of a chosen few. There was no other way of spreading information in the centralized manner.

Religion is predecessor of Fox TV, and such.

Yes and to gain new converts also as in "do you know where you going when you die? ... Well I know where I'm going because the bible tells me."

Forget propaganda...more like extortion.

Forget propaganda...more like extortion.Concealed threats, extortion and intimidation are indispensable propaganda tools, even in advertising.
American propaganda had its birth, so far as I can tell, in the advertising industry. The pioneers of advertising—a truly loathsome bunch—learned early on that people would respond to purely emotional appeals. Abstract theory and logical argument do nothing to spur sales. However, appeals to sexiness, to pride of ownership, to fear of falling behind the neighbors are the stock in trade of advertising executives. A man walking down the street with beautiful women hanging on his arms is not a logical argument, but it sure sells after-shave. A woman in a business suit with a briefcase, strolling along with swaying hips, assuring us she can "bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan, but never let you forget you’re a man" really sells the perfume.

Let’s take a moment and analyze the particular emotions that this execrable ad appealed to. If you guessed fear, you win the prize. Women often have a fear of inadequacy, particularly in this confused age when they are expected to raise brilliant kids, run a successful business, and be unfailingly sexy, all the time. That silly goal—foisted upon us by feminists and popular culture—is impossible to reach. But maybe there’s hope if you buy the right perfume! Arguments from intimidation and appeals to fear are powerful propaganda tools.

In my opinion the entire purpose of religion is for man to control his fellow man through by playing on their belief in a supreme being.

The Bible does not say God hates sinners.Just to clarify.

Control is a strong word. I think "control" should be substitued with "influence." When it comes to religion in this day and age (in most countries, anyway), we are not any more controlled by religion THAN WHAT WE WANT TO BE; we may or may not allow ourselves to be "controlled"; so really, "influence" is a more apt term here.

It isn't religion that uses propaganda but the man who wishes to influence in favor of his own religion. The Bible teaches to hate the sin but love the sinner. Jesus came to save the sinners, not hate the sinners.

PS: And we are ALL sinners!

This may be a little off subject, but have you guys heard of the big deal that Jerry Falwell and a buch of other religious groups are making about stores saying "Happy Holidays", instead of Merry Christmas?

Religion IS the opium of the people.

So many religions have laws that control the intimate relationships of even married couples and for the simple reason that it would increase their membership and, thus, their power and wealth.
When any body has an imput into this most private of areas, you should know they have a lot to gain by it.
