Up to 3000 schools have been targeted in a DVD blitz aimed at challenging Charles Darwin's theory of evolution in favour of an "intelligent designer".

The right to teach intelligent design in science classes is being tested in US courts and a fiery debate has erupted in Australia that has pitted scientists against advocates for the "alternative theory" to evolution.

Proponents of intelligent design say some forms of life are so complex they can be explained only by the action of an unspecified "intelligent designer", who some say is God.

A commonly cited example of this complex life is the flagellum, a natural "outboard motor" that propels a bacterium along. The argument is that it could not have been produced by the incremental steps of evolution, because it would not function if it was missing any of its parts.

The Minister for Education, Carmel Tebbutt, said intelligent design "can't be taught as part of the NSW school science curriculum" because it was not scientific or based on evidence.

No, doubt these people als believe that electronic devices are some kind of black magic.

Argh, must we copy everything the USA. Stop blighting our society! We don't need the religious right. Reality TV shows were quite enough for the current decade!

Excuse me, but was it not Europeans that invented the reality TV show? We just copied it and splattered it everywhere.

Anyway, thank goodness the trend seems to be on the downslope. I HATE those shows.

My first post was a little bit tongue in cheek, but... Shouldn't we try to expunge poisonous philosophies such as political Christian (or Islamic, for that matter) fundamentalism? Any individual can follow whatever philosophy they wish, but they shouldn't be allowed to force their junk on anyboby else. Of course I am not advocating a ban on such things, that would be counterproductive. These philosophies should however be derided and demeaned.

Really? Well we copied you. That is what we always do. We copy America with a lag time of a couple of years, and then we hate America for it. Be glad you haven't heard Australian hip-hop! Now was Europe or America at fault for all of those home improvement shows? :D

Yes well we also gave the world such excellent shows as Twin Peaks, The Simpsons, Northern Exposure, and MASH! We get it right sometimes.. good with the bad good with the bad.. :D

True, true. I'm more annoyed about how Australia copies the US than what the US puts out.

Rex Hunt is known outside of Australia? That's just weird. How did that happen?
