Las Cruces Residents Notified About Uranium In Water
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
February 28, 2006
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - The city has notified Las Cruces residents about uranium in the city's water supply, but city officials say they're already taking steps to fix the problem.
Five of the city's 30 wells contain higher concentrations of uranium than allowed under U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards, and the city mailed 26,000 fliers last week to water customers alerting them to the levels.
No standards existed for uranium in water before 2003.
"I think it's important to note the water quality hasn't changed," said Gilbert V. Morales, city water resources administrator. "It's still the same water that we've been pumping out of the aquifer for the past 50 years."
Health risks are minimal, he said.
Las Cruces hasn't complied with the EPA standard since it was set three years ago, and is required to send fliers every three months notifying customers about the concentrations, Morales said.
